Why are large fish so easy to buy?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my friend bought a silver arowana the other day at 4" long and the lsf bloke didn't even ask him one question! people research fish when they truely are hooked just the same when you go to a garden centre and see a plant and "thats looks nice we'll have 4". Fish like aros, rtc etc should have the size and tank size stated when you buy a fish by law as lsf get sick of taking huge oscars back so refuse and animal shelters full so fish ends up in a 10 deg river.

The thing I don't like about stores that sell extra large fish is that, for the most part, they don't sell tanks that will hold them. I'm talking about chain stores that sell, say Pacus, but the largest tank you can buy from them is a 75 gallon (more likely a 55.) Sell the fish, that's fine, but also sell a proper sized tank to house them! At least my LFS will special order large tanks for me, but the chains do not.

Exactly...not to mention how much money are they really making off of
Pacu's...here there are about 3 bucks. Seriously? It's ignorance as a noob until you learn to research.

Good points.
Dont get me wrong, I do not regret them, it's just meant I have a fish tank larger than I expected and I am going to have to build a pond for him at some point.
My tank could at least give me the added bonus of being a pretty grow tank.

Wonder how many people are having to return unwanted ignorant noob moves back to the Fish store, or 'Nature World's.

Amazing the amount of people that aquired fish without any research being done at all.:duh:Then they want to blame others for their own irreasponability.

I do not blame them for my purchase, as I said I have the space for a larger tank when he needs it.

My point is if I was breeding my Shar Pei pair I would ensure that any future owner was aware of their traits before I handed a pup over.
If I didn't think something was adequate I would say so, I wouldn't mis sell something by giving mis leading information.

They can not say they did not know, since I have been back to the shop and and informed them the 35cm is not correct they continue to advertise the fish as a lightweight.

Wether they like it or not, they have a duty of care to ensure the fish are going to be looked after and healthy surely.

So this buyer of your Shar pei would not need to have any knowledge of this dog before buying it from you. Or do you think they should probably research first to see if this is the right dog for them?

People tend to have a nasty habit of making a snap decision on pet, its human nature to do it.
I get the impression that many people have done the same as I, the interweb forums are full of this, the LFS's must be aware of it, the powers at me must be aware of it.. I just wonder why there is no form of regulation in this area.
The fish store wont sell you fish until the water tests are correct, wont sell you feeder fish if they know you have predators, why is the idea of questioning a future owner for a river monster any different?

I see so you want to punish the whole with more regulations instead of just dealing with the irresponsible few.
