Why are large fish so easy to buy?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you're coming from where i'm coming... if anything moves... lets eat it:ROFL:cats, dogs, snakes, rats, monkeys.......and so on. Here someone try to think fishes are on the same level with people just not something I "IMO" would even think of.

Back to the subject . I walked in a few fish stores and there are huge pacus filled up a couple of tanks, half face cichlids (the other half is missing or covered with some sh$+), floating death fishes in the current and so on. That make me sad...Personally, i would say people should be more responsible for there action, both the buyers and sellers more so on the buyers. You just don't buy it just because you could afford and able to care for it NOW. Just like you don't go out and buy a house just because you could afford it now, would you?

If religious people could be reasoned with, there would be no religious people. That's where my thick comment came from. And its normal for most people not to understand, due to our intelligence as a species we separate ourselves from nature and think of animals and people as two different things. We are a arrogant race, hence our feeling of superiority.

I do feel for you, A long time ago when I first got into the hobby, I bought an albino channel cat. I had no clue... my parents kept gold fish and neons. He was cute and so I brought him home. As most of you can already guess I was ignorant, the fish grew way to big for my tank and died. We all learn in different ways, but if it was not for that huge catfish I would never have discovered my love for Monster fish.

I do agree with many that said it is up to the purchaser to know their fish before they buy them. However... Know your LFS's just as well! People interview dog breeders to know what a bloodline holds (disease, temperment etc.) So why shouldn't we "interview" our LFS's. I know the LFS's in my area that are honest and care for the hobby, and I know those that lie or just know nothing of the hobby. I have 3 different LFS in my area and yet I choose to drive 30 miles to one outside my area because I trust them and their tanks are well cared for.

If you see a fish that you like at an LFS. Research it, where it originates from, and provide it with the best quality home you can. I still feel bad about that catfish, but I appreciate what happened because it gave me the passion for the hobby and a lesson that I never have nor will repeat. In fact I passed up my Arowana less that a week ago because I don't have the room... quite yet. lol

Actually my wife came home the other day from Walmart and proceeded to tell me that they had a Polypterus! I thought she was joking. It took everything I had not to drive down there and save the poor thing but if people continue to buy fish from these bad LFS's they in turn make money from them and continue to stock them. If they are not profitable in that they shut down or quit selling those fish.

Well said ^

Agree with those who said the fault is on the customer. It is our responsibility to learn the theory and background of the fish we want to keep before actually getting them. Don't subject the fish to abuse by keeping them in a small tank. They don't deserve it.

The LFS aren't to blame either. They are just like every working citizen, they want to earn $ to pay the bills and keep their family fed. Therefore they employ minimum wage workers who knows nothing about the fishes they are selling. And those workers know s*** about those fishes.

Someone needs to open a LFS name it MFK and turn it into a chain that spreads across the country, employing our very own MFK'ers. That right there my friend is not only a cash crop but a very well educated cash crop. ROFL

LOl someone do it. It would make life so much easier.

I feel it's us as well. It's our job to know the requirements of the fish before buying..... Water chemistry, temp, tank size...

I google everything. And I shop at stores where I have good cell service so I can research standing in front of a display tank.

yes and no. Not at fishes cost of the fish of being mistreated and in short tortured. but there is no perfect world and if you kno more youre more $ .you going to kno less but if you can still bring in the same amount of $ then that other guy, your hired! if you really think about it the only thing that keeps this world turning is money, and that's really unfortunate....
