Why are these being sold????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So how do you stop the sale of something with out banning it ?

Like some people have said in earlier posts, only by special order, no need to keep them in stock. But much agreed...

I guess we just interpret things differently. It doesnt make sense for us to argue over someone elses comments. I guess tag him and see if thats was he meant.

I like you mate and you're right, no sense us arguing about others' comments; for that matter I'm done with this cookie, it's kind of like we're arguing just for arguing's sake when in fact we agree on most points.

One side, I don't think 10 year old little johnny should get a 4 ft fish for his 10 gallon.

On the other hand I don't want government stepping in and banning fish.
Hello; I follow both points and do not have the answer.

just as common if not more, it's released into a local body of water -- causing all kinds of problems -- and THAT is why we have more and more laws regulating these matters -
Hello; I did an undergraduate paper on a particular invasive species back in the 1960's. The cry against invasives was out but was limited to a very small segment of the population. It was a lot of years before I heard of Oscars being wild caught in Florida. My neighbor to the East has a 20 some acre pasture and has to work to keep some invasive weeds down . Some pastures where they do not fight have lost well over half their grass.

here in australia nearly everything is banned and if there is suspicion you have something you shouldn't then the fisheries dept. (canT recall the exact name of the govt dept.) can come to your house. If they find something they will pour bleach into every tank you have ,killing the fish and all microorganisms.
Hello; Very informative.

not many people seem to understand is that the irresponsible/uneducated people help feed the hobby/market aswell. Without them the cycle stops. thats my 2nd point im trying to get across. We cant condone the neubs to the point of no return.

don’t think telling someone that their tank is not appropriate is going to make them leave the hobby.
Hello; An adult friend who is a medical professional got his son a 55 gallon many years ago. They put two or three baby Oscars in it and only topped off the water, never doing a WC. Of course all the Oscars eventually died. The tank sat and slowly evaporated down. The son is now grown and an engineer.
They stop by my new home the last few years and always like to sit and look at my tanks. The father got the notion to start up the old empty 55. The son declined. The father wanted to just fill the tank with water as it sat (no cleaning at all) and get some more Oscars. I hope I talked him out of it as I laid out a long list of things needed to get the tank running again. As far as I know it still sits empty. I am guilty of costing a LFS the sale of two or three Oscars.

When he told my ex and I he was selling up I asked him why he wasn't making enough money, he told me that morals don't make money

Its a sucky truth but those inexperienced "noobs" are what keep the prices down in our hobby.

to say we need animals to suffer at the hand of inexperienced keepers for the good of the hobby is the craziest thing I’ve ever heard!
We need more puppy mills it keeps the price of pure breed dogs down.
Hello; Unfortunately I get both points and do not know what to say.

When you make an attempt to always get the last word on a public forum without letting the other person know, that can be perceived as sneaky

Manually quoting posts so users are not alerted may be subtle, but it is manipulative nonetheless.
Hello Carp; You are growing on me more and more.
huge difference in giving advice and trying to school new hobbyists than the flaming that occurs.
Hello; Yes to this

it is annoying to see someone ignore advice and then want to get bailed out and I understand why people would be irritated but genuine newcomers should be treated differently.
Hello; I tried this approach yesterday with a new keeper. The new keeper seems sincere and it is worth it to try to be of aid when I get that sense from someone.

So how do you stop the sale of something with out banning it ?
Hello; Excellent question, and one I have no answer for.
