My dad originally got me into fish. Then I was out of the hobby for years. Then I see my brother had what he called a 55 gallon tank that used to home his turtle sitting around. It actually was a 30 gal. I set it up and the rest is history. Been back at it since 1993.
My dad got me into keeping fish a few years back. He owned a fish store back in the day before he got into banking and it's been a nice father-son hobby. Talking fish with your father can be a lot like attending a baseball game when you're 6. I really do not have any fish-related goals since I am in college and working on career goals instead, but I do have dream tanks in mind. There are plenty of fish that I am unable to keep at the moment so I like to daydream about one day owning them (i.e. arowanas, peacock bass, stingrays, even saltwater sharks, like smoothhounds, among others...). I like thinking about how I might display my custom show tanks in my house some day, like a U-shaped tank that curves around theater chairs in my basement. I like learning about new species and jumping into the deep-end with rare fish.
Got a 5i gallon tank from S&H green stamps for a present on my 7 th birthday. This was 1968! The tank was a metaframe with slate bottum. Box filter small heater feeding ring and lime green gravel. Always had a tank setup since then except when in the service. Actually a captain had a huge reef tank in his office that I use to check out periodically.
my grandfather gave me a few small tanks when i very young... kinda snowballed or something from there. goals? i want to travel through south america and find some rare fish or something. not to mention i have about 50 different dream tanks haha. i love this hobby.

I also got my first tank when I was 7, a 10 gal for Christmas '74. Acouple of years later a friends brother went off to college and left behind a 30 which his dad gave to me, set it up with a pair of Gold Severum and a Channel cat, Ive been hooked ever since, cant sleep without the sound of water and pumps now. Funny story about Metaframe, I managed a lfs for a few years, had a couple bring in a Metaframe slate bottom tank with all the accesories still in boxes and with a reciept from '69 or '70 for the whole thing, never been used. We traded it for a 30 gal All-Glass just to have as a display. When we opened the filter box a stack of Polaroid photos fell out. It was all pictures they had taken of each other nude, love beads and peace signs in the background right out of the early '70's. I know one day they were sitting around thinking "I wonder what we ever did with those pics... OH CRAP!!!"
I started when I first went over to a friends house and he had 4 tanks in his room and a huge pacu! we started dating and eventually i became as intrigued with fish as he was! He gave me some tanks and now i have my own fish and I couldnt stop if i wanted lol. I love aqauriums.
I started getting interested when my family inherited my uncles fish tank and african cichlids we had them for a while until on named Killer killed them all then whey switched over to goldfish and tetras and now I pretty much own the fish and care for them.
Porcupine Puffer fish, great personality, always smiling... Everytime I went to the aquarium as a kid, I hung by their tank for hours, just something about them... After my first aquarium, all the fish just seem to have their own personalities and would react to you like they knew you. I have been hooked ever since... I love this hobby...
I've been fascinated by all animals for as long as I can remember. I've always had reptiles, since I was around 6 or 7. My uncle has a 55 gallon setup that he had for years and he didn't want it anymore. He gave it to me and I kept the tank and all my reptiles. I wasn't into fish as much and I eventually gave the tank away. One day I went fishing and caught a nice baby bass and thought how cool it would be to keep one. I started researching like crazy and realized I wanted cichlids. My best friend got into it and I learned that my dad had fish for a long time too. Now I only have one tank, which is my in-wall 180 gallon.
My eventual goal is to have a large enough pond in my garage or basement to house a tiger shovelnose or a 300+ gallon acrylic aquarium. I don't think that either is out of my reach after I'm out of school.
