Why does my tank smell soooo bad???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought my 55 from someone on craigslist... and it smells to high heaven! It has this awful, "dry" rotten stench to it, and I cannot figure out why. I scrubbed EVERYTHING that I got with the tank down with ammonia, including the tank. I threw out the lights and hood (which were probably the worst) and I still can't shake the stink. If you figure it out, let me know so I can get rid of it too!

Lol. Sorry but this thread is making me lmao... How often do you do water change? My guess is once in every blue moon. A tank shouldn't smell is you do water changes once a week or every two weeks.

once a week, I do vacuum... dang people, dont jump to comclusions...

I do a 25% WC every monday... Im not a dang retard!!!

i stir up the sand also, and yes I know what im doing...

dont jump on somebody and make quick assumptions...

I just posted earlier that my last WC was yesterday, and i said it was 25%

i dont have gravel but i still sift through the sand with the vacuum as it is heavy sand and my syphon doesnt suck it up..

i try to keep all of my tanks in the best shape possible

my tetra filter doesnt have carbon...

unless your talking about the black flossy looking stuff

BTW, i forgot to mention, last week I did a 50% WC instead of a 25 because the smell was so bad... I thought it might help the smell but it didnt

The black pad could be a carbon pad or a coarse filter pad. The charcoal pads are usually only good for a couple of weeks. After that, they're just good dirt collectors and beneficial bacteria harborers.

Don't take the naysayers too seriously. After a while you'll notice how many posters there are that don't read the whole thread before posting off on partial info.

If you're tank is completely clear, I wouldn't assume the bio-filter crashed yet. You could try some charcoal. If the smell is waterborne, the charcoal will remove the smell. If the odor originates from decorations, driftwood, etc., the odor will return after the charcoal is removed.

i wasn't trying to jump to conclsuions...... i just saw that someone was mentioning vacuuming and not vacuuming would definitely lead to a smelly tank
