Why does my tank smell soooo bad???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how deep is your sandbed? When you say you stir it, how much? There have been problems in using sand in tanks, as it can have anoxic areas in them, which can lead to the smell your describing. Actually, it's kind of a dead giveaway, as there aren't to many things that smell that way in fishtanks. I would recomend removing the ebjd to a temporary holding tank (or a bucket for you technophiles) and stirring the sand bottom thouroghly. then, do a massive water change. After the tank has settled down some, use your nose. If it smells clean, it's safe for the ebjd. A couple of things to think about for the future, add some malaysian burrowing snails. They will help aerate the soil. Also, a loach will help with that, especially the kuhli loaches.
If your doing some of this stuff, great, stir more and deeper I quess?

it is barely above the black part on the tank bottom... idk what you would call it, but by sifting through it i mean every WC i run my syphon through it and when i run my hand through it and try to make it even the best i can =/

wow, alot of people viewing this but so little response???

and I do not have another tank for him to stay in, except the tank that the other EBJD is in.. but he is alot larger so should I worry?

and could I put some of those loaches with me EBJDs???

I have seen where those things get pretty big, but I dont want to overstock my tank...

pretty soon the 2 EBJD will have a 55 to themselves...

i had the same problem as u a few months ago. i did a few of these things to solve it.

1. cleaned every inch of the tank and i mean every inch! especially under the lid..

2. do mechanical filter maintenance more often

3. feed a little less

4. burn coconut oil very close to the tank for 1 week straight

Linemanbrad, I'm only on page 3 of this thread so far.
But in answer to your question on page 2-yes, rinse out the filter pads because my bet is that's where the smell's coming from. I rinse out filter pads with every single weekly water change. The bio-sponge (if that's what you've got, too) also gets gunky and needs rinsed. But don't rinse the bio-sponge real hard, just slightly to get the slimy gunk off.

The general cure-all for odors is new carbon, but as oddball and others are saying, you need to figure out if the odor is waterbourne or originates from some object within the tank. I would recommend stirring the sand bed and rinsing filter pads in tank water to get rid of any stagnant area, do another water change to get rid of any NH3 or excess H2S that might be released, then add carbon to your filter and away you go. Just find a space and put some carbon in a media bag, easy enough. You'll probably want to move the EBJD to a bucket while you do this, like kzimmerman said..

ok, just got done with the 75% WC, the water is a little cloudt but NO SMELL!!!!

I found out it WAS the filter cartridges so I swapped out the cartridges on all of my tanks so we are good to go =)

thanks for all of the help you guys

and BTW I THOROUGHLY sifred through the sand =)

oh, and yes I did move the EBJD into the other EBJD tank... I never realised how beautiful he was!!!!

Considering I got him half off because "he didnt look good"

lol, both of my EBJDs were half off
