Why haven't Coldwater species have been popularized yet?

When I kept natives temps never got above 70° in my Wisconsin basement. Unheated in the winter they stayed around 55°.

its shameful that brook trout are intolerant of warm temperatures.

Truly, they're in my top 5 list of fish to keep. I'd love like a 10'x4'x3' tank full of a school of wild brook trout, some river or Hornyhead chubs, a stonecat or two, a small shoal of suckers, and a filter feeding lamprey.

If I get any of these guys, they'll be going into a tank in my unfinished basement where summer time temp will only reach about 70 on hot days.

Still a bit hot for Brookies IMO. I'd love to keep them now if I thought 70 was a fine temp but ideally it should stay <65 degrees or if possible below 60.

Speaking of Brook trout, I was just at the Pittsburgh aquarium and happened to snap a few shots of their brook trout which are all 16-24"! Plus some of their rainbow darters

I never understood why people don't keep natives in their koi ponds.

I have two outdoor ponds that I keep natives and comets in. They coexist wonderfully. I have 2 pumpkinseeds, one channel cat, a spotted bass, a bream, 3 crucian carp, and a few comets.

Having kept both temperate/native fish and tropical fish, I can't say that I like one over the other. I think the tropical a are pushed so much in stores that many people just don't know too much about keeping natives.

But we arent talking about just you we are talking about people in general. Im sure if we slapped a native label on any of those fish you would be all "get this fish" on the stocking threads.

Not necessarily, I'm not completely for every native fish. I'm not really a fan of Texas cichlids which are native just because I don't like cichlids, the same goes for Mexican tetras which are also native, I just don't like tetras that much. I'm not against all tropicals, heck, most people know I love catfish from all over the world and I'm also a fan of Asian Cyprinids, and about all European fish. I love all those types of fish as well, but natives would have to take the number one spot if someone made me pick.
