I was just curious as to why you would want to keep them? I imagine it is expensive to be feed them, they probably dirty the tank quickly when ripping other lives apart. I have also come across several photos on the site and they aren't exactly great looking. Umbees, Doviis, Buttikoferi's and several other cichlid species look better and would own piranha's in a one on one situation hence why all the piranha videos on youtube show one fish getting slaughtered by a gang of piranha or show a much larger fish eating another.

This is not a flame. I am just wondering why you chose piranhas?

way to make yourself sound uneducated! i guess you didn't do enough research to know that more than just RBP's do exist. then again...you start a thread like this and are too much of a coward to return...well at least post again!

oh yeah...and if i was one of those people that needs to know my fish is bad...my rhom would own the listed fish above! instead i continue to feed him smelt and shrimp. he hasn't killed another fish since ive owned him. do your research before you shoot your mouth off!!!

I really can't see how this post isn't a flame. You start off with telling us our fish are dirty, then moving to how they are ugly, and finally calling them pussies. Would you like to run over my dog or make out with my mother while you're at it?

I love my Ps just like you love your fish, which I am sure there is someone out there asking you the same question about yours. Probably in the same (ignorant but not stupid) way. I really like the overall generalizations made towards P owners, because it is an automatic answer for everything. I'm in college, so owning a RBP is just an "in" thing. Thats why I'm the only person I know who has one. I automatically fit in the age group of these crazy, irresponsible people who got their hands on these fish. I think that the posts made by several of the people are ignorant of one thing. If we were as weird and irresponsible and just trying to act out, then why would we join a forum based on a general love of our fish, and the want to keep them safe and happy?

well you obviously never seen alot of them if you think there ugly, check out some diamond rhombeus's, or geryi, and say they ugly, i swear i'll internet slap you.

Hey XR can I watch?!?! BTW don't forget RBPs on that list of pretty fish!!

My fish can pwn a cichlid pellet!! Yea, he's a viscious fella!! lol

I am also in that age group, and resent that silly stereotype, it's just about as bad as the stereotypes that began this thread.

You could ask my fiance, while all I knew about these fish was only stereotypes, I'll admit, I didn't think they were that great. It wasn't until I saw one up close in person, and had the chance to make it mine, that I fell for them completely.

A cat person may ask Why keep fish, they're messy, and have no personalities?
A dog person would ask, Why keep cats, they want nothing to do with you?

Anyone who's smarter than a brick, would know that both of those questions are stereotypes in themselves. Considering my goldfish are ALWAYS happy to see me, especially when I have food. And I'm having a problem getting my frickin cats to leave me alone!!

With out a doubt, I agree that piranha site is very very informative. Although I think alot of people try to make piranha more hardcore than they are and get caught up more in exploiting how mean they think their piranha is.

I think alot of people buy them on hype, but there's a difference between thinking the fish is cool and thinking " i gOtS a PiRaNhA yO aNd iTs wIlL kIlL aNy fIsh!!" and "iM gOnNa fEed tHeM a gUiNeA pIg, yOu tHiNk tHeY'll eAt iT?"

I think we both came from the same piranha site, and it's that mentality that turned me off of keeping piranha.

Beautiful fish though. You should post your piraya.. My favorite piranha and one of my favorite fish altogether.

Didn't read the rest of the thread but I will post some of my piraya for you.

my opinion is that they will eventually reach almost full size (24") in captivity if given the right conditions and enough time... I'm not sure anyone has had a group of them long enough to find out.

I think a zoo got about 20 of them to over 17" in a couple years.

my opinion is that in most person's aquaria, like 6x2's or what have you they'd max out at 15", even if very well fed, you really need alot of room, time and feeding like pubilic aquariums have to grow out fish to the 24" size, that has been rumored but not provved, only 21-22" max-and that was wild caught not home grown.
