Why you should keep GAR

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I never see them for sale here, well except the occasional Alligator Gar. :wall:

Not that they aren't cool but who has room for a full grown Gator gar? :nilly:

I would like to get one of the smaller species some day though, I have just never seen a single one for sale here that I recall.

basically i just threw it in and resisted feeding live. they just took it. here's a more detailed technique if that doesn't work for you

so you're saying that a 3" gar should be given a 150/180 gal tank to ensure it's "really comfortable"?

with florida gars you wouldn't need anything close to 8ft long. in fact, a 5x4ft footprint is more than enough, or even prefered compared to an 8x2.5. all the gars pictured in this thread are in a 5ft tank, and i assure you they are "really comfortable"

"minimum" and "really comfortable" are actually 2 completely different things that you seem to have confused for having the same meaning. an 8' long tank would definately be impressive by any standards, but not really necessary for gar. as Solomon previously mentioned, width is more important for these fish, and a 6x4 would be prefered compared to an 8x3

I couldnt agree more that gars need width more than length and no i am not saying you should keep a 3" gar in a 150/180 which is why a put "(once they get large)" that you conveniently missed out, and a very wide tank i would deascribe as a very large so a 5x4 in my mind is larger than an 8x2.5x2, i stated 8x2.5x2 initially because in my mind it is the required length for such a large fish (you seem to disagree, fair enough) but only 2.5x2 because that is what you could get away with (minimum) but an 8x3 0r 8x4 would be better and "very comfortable".
And very comfortable were your words i certainly havnt confused it with minimum.
I do not wish to start an argument i gave the guy my advice, what i would do if i were to purchase a gar if you disagree fair enough would it not have been better to just give him your advice without quoting my oppinion on the subject, the last thing this site needs is more arguments. Thats one problem with forums, there are far too many big ego's and conflicting oppinions and it allways ends up with yet another argument.:grinno:
I appologise as i seem to have offended you, really i didnt intend to cause an argument.;)

I have a small crocodile gar in my community tank, its only 75 gallon, hopefully next year i will build myself a really good tank something like 150 or 200 or maybe just build the stand. anyhow i love my gar, he eats live right now, and also eats bloodworms and freeze dried white shrimp if he is getting hungry. today he ate a live goldfish and fought my small oscar for it , it was quite humorous :P

That third to last feeding pic is amazing
I wasnt aware gar could move like that

sure:) it's no arguement, i am just disagreeing with you when you say that the minimum tank requirements for florida gars is 8x3
