Why you should keep GAR

you have a spotted gar, it looks great! oscars are horrible tankmates thou...

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR GAR TO EAT SHRIMP!!!
ive been trying so hard to get him to feed off of market shrimp but he wont eat it

When I was in my teens I had a 75 gallon tank with a 13" red snakehead a 12" blue line snakehead (don't know another name for it) an alligator gar 13"(could have been a spotted) and they all eventually ate those smelly tetra cichlid sticks whiched saved my tons compared to feeders. This whole tanl size debate is GREAT for the MFK community. I think we should have a formal debate about such topics and generate a guidline for newbies as well as yee old hobbyists that just think that because the fish can turn around that the tank is big enough. When I was 10 I saw a 10" gar in the local fish store and was hooked. The salseman ended up sending it home with me.........to put in my 29 gallon tank! and yes we told him what size it was. My "theory" is that the tank should be at least 4x the length of the fish and at least 2x as wide. The hell with height for gars as long as its at least 6" deep lol
