Then ask him.

Mo, this is exactly what the mods have been saying all along. None of you heeded then, why should I now.
As for the umbee's, I honestly couldn't care less. I decided not to buy any when I heard that everyone was getting females instead of the males that they requested. I know better than to believe that a person w/ so much experience can't sex a 6" cichlid.

Much, much nicer than the other three varients found in the same place... :nilly:
So go figure; 2 thread w/ countless pages splitting hairs over this one species. Different races? yes; however the pearling and coloring of the different variants may have more to do with water chemistry than anything else.

How big are yours? Mine are just little guys at about 2 inches and already coloring up big time. Spunky too, I just put them in the tank and already eating like pigs.
Michael your are 1 of 6 members who picked up vontehillos this week and you all say the same thing, in the end its all about the fish. Now lets some pics please.

I think you can tell whether its wild caught or not base on its behavior.
Mine doesn't eat in front of me, always shy. Aquarium raised carpintis eat a lot, even feed off your hands.

This is completely false. I've had wild ones that would eat like nothing else. Attacking food and everything else in front of them. I've had aquarium strains that are shy. You cannot tell a wild fish by it's behavior or it's looks. That is complete BS.

i wish mine eat like pigs. It comes up and grab a pellet once a while, thats why it is growing slow.

well, not saying that fish that eat viciously are aquarium raised.

I found one thing interesting above this variety, its very chubby.
I've been keeping mine for a long time, i think its 6" also. Could be the maximum size.

It's funny how these threads come off as someone being so called "curious" and trying to ensure the safety or purity of the hobby. However, many times I see them as witch hunts, especially when it involves certain people. Over the many years that I've been involved in the hobby I have seen these types of threads come and go, yes people do have the right to ask questions and people have a right to answer or not. Would we like for all of our questions to be answered? Indeed, but if they are not, we have the right to either get involved with (in this case) the fish or not, so if your questions are not answered satisfactorily then move on, its just that simple. In this hobby if you stick around long enough you'll see many of these fish come and go. The ones that stick around have some type of value to someone for ex EBJD. A part of the hobby is about what the PEOPLE like, so if you like it, keep it. If you don't like it or your questions aren't answered then move on. In this episode of the witch hunt starring the new kid on the block, Ira, and the long time favorite DC.....lol s.o.s from the same old clicks/chicks. The thing thats funny to me when the question is asked, isn't this what the hobby is about? But when you have a noob to the hobby asking a question about a disease, parasite, fungus or a remedy for any simple problem, I dont see half the interest........ hummmm, just makes me wonder. 12 pages on this, 7 comments to a newby's question on how to deal with ich, we as experienced fish keepers should ALSO be interested in helping in that way as well. I guess thats not fun enough or the potential to throw flames at someone is not great enough. But isn't that what the hobby is suppose to be about? Getting new blood in the hobby to ensure its survival should be what we're about, not exposing or even trying to expose every so called new species. This is a joke!!!!!!

Tornfins, I think if some of the respondents to your "noob disease question thread" were selling medicine, you'd get a much livelier discussion!

(Off to start a "Super Rare Bottle of Formalin" thread.)
