The guy at my LFS told me tht some guy came into the store and bought 112$ in livebearers...... HE didnt want to replace his cichlids.... but he wanted to keep his fish tank so he did livebearers

Had 15 catfish die in 10 years, and doesn't see a problem? Jackass!

I've actually been amazed by how much bad information there is in aquarium books I've read. Half of them claim Jack dempseys are 'pugnacious and intolerant" (yes, those exact words) and they need a species tank, when many cichlids are MORE aggressive conspecifically. I was looking at a book last night that said discus need at least 24 gallons...24? Why not 25? Either way, thats not big enough. Also, most of them have the wrong genus for cichlids.

Tonight's shift manager had to deal with a woman for hours because she bought some Riccia and it clogged her filter to the point of it stopping. Apparently, she had no knowledge of fishkeeping and bought it because she wanted and the salesperson said it was OK. We do not know your fishkeeping experience nor can we teach the vagaries of the entire fishkeeping hobby in one visit. Every fishkeeper out there learns a great deal from their own mistakes.

Agreed, I've seen books with ridiculously wrong full size and aggression statistics. The incorrect genus listings usually comes down to date of publishing and revisions and reclassifications though so I let them off on those.

I have seen books list numerous puffers are community fish. I know some ppl can keep them with other fish but I think saying they are community is very misleading and not correct. lol I can't even keep my tiny tiny dwarf puffers with anything else.

What's worse than dumb customers is dumb employees. I walked into a LFS after just seeing a video of a mantis shrimp. I wasn't out to buy one, but I thought it might be cool to see one up close. So I walk up to the nearest person working there and ask him "Do you carry mantis shrimp?" He replies "No, we don't carry insects here" all the while laughing as if I was the incompetent moron. I said "Evidently not, but you carry crustaceans don't you, the mantis shrimp is a crustacean isn't it?" He stopped laughing and showed me a tank full of ghost shrimp. I just said "No, thanks anyways" and walked away.

N doubt, after you left, he had a conversation with another employee about the stupid customer who thought a praying mantis was a shrimp!
