I would believe that it's ok to keep tanks going without filters. When I was little in the far east (Asia)... back then no one really had fancy filters.... and electrity was not available 24/7. I used to keep fish in the round clay water holding tanks. In the tanks I had lots of cabomba and anacharis my fish thrived and spawned like crazy.

You know - if you have a powerhead running without the airtube/venturi effect thing - it should not make any noise at all.

last month my power went out for 4 days, the water temp dipped down to 50 F and my silver arowana, african, and bichir survived probably because I had live plants
