Would These Fish Work in My 55 Gallon Show Tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You’ll eventually need to supplement the calcium if the snails exhaust it I believe, cuttlebone for birds is great for this as it’s pure calcium if I recall correctly. Grab a pack online or in walmart, should be less than $5, it was $3 I think.

flyingb flyingb , I was wondering if you could answer some of my questions. I am a tween, and am new to fish keeping. I am currently cycling a 55 gallon tank. I plan on putting Dojo Loaches, some livebearers, and corydoras. I just wanted to ask you if you have tips for cycling my tank. This is kinda random, but just wanted to say welcome aboard. I joined a few weeks ago, and have been on here non-stop! This truly is a great website. Gourami Swami Gourami Swami and D deeda are helping Me during this, in which I appreciate. If their is anything you need help with, ask us! Also, if you want to give someone a notification. Put an @ sign before their name like if their was someone named Spaghetti9, you would put an @ sign before their name (@Spaghetti9). Have a great day!

The Masked Shadow The Masked Shadow , you are going to have to check with Petsmart about buying an intake strainer for your HOB as they are the ones who sell that brand filter. You might have to take the intake tube with you or if the intake tube has sections, just take the lower piece with you. Are you sure you don't have that piece already in your box of parts?

Also, did your sponge filter come with a clear tube that fits in the top piece above the sponge? Usually they do.

As far as your test results, the pH looks just fine so continue to use the low range pH test. It is also good that you tested ammonia, nitrite and nitrate since the tank is newly set up. Your tank is NOT ready for fish yet though, cycling a tank can take awhile depending on the method used. I'll see if I can find a link to an easy explanation for you to follow.

D deeda , I will look for the Intake strainer. My sponge filter didn’t come with a tube, and is hooked to my Aquarium Air pump Whisper 40. Just went fishing for Bass and Catfish. Caught nothing. Can you give me some instructions of what to test and when?

I always suggest that a new fish keeper test their aquarium daily or every other day for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and keep a written record with the date and results for each test. pH can be tested weekly, before and after a water change until you can verify that the pH remains stable and doesn't change, keep a record of this also.

Cycling an aquarium for the first time is an adventure and there are a couple different ways to do this before it is safe to add fish or other aquatic creatures.

1) Some people use a bottled bacteria product but you need to follow the instructions exactly including the amount of product to use, how often the product needs to be added and the number of fish that can be added at the beginning.

2) Some people prefer to use the fish less cycle method BEFORE you add any fish to the tank. This method can take up to 6 weeks before it is ready for fish. I've used this method multiple times with great success. Here is a link to the method I use Fish less cycling along with frequently asked questions. Please read the entire article before you attempt to use this method and if you can print it out for quick reference, even better.

D deeda , I put in some Water Conditioner that Gourami Swami Gourami Swami recommended to me. I put in some Quick Start after. I think I will wait a good 5-6 weeks before any fish. Also, I don’t know how to keep Ramshorn snails. Do you have tips?
