nova your wrong about the foot print of a 55g. it is 48 X 12 X 20
that is not good for one oscar seeing as how a lot of oscars get 13in+.

people cannot put 3 oscars in a 60g. i guess its "posible" but its also possible to cram a 14in. midas in a 10g.
A 48 x 12 x 20 is only 49.87 US Gallons, even less taking into account the glass wall thickness..A standard 55 here is 48 X 15 x 18 which is actually 56.1 US gallons before allowing for wall thickness. This is why we all should probably go on footprint and not Gallons. In a standard 55 gal 15' wide I wouldn't hasitate for 1 oscar.I have seen 2 O's 13'+ in a 55 gal (48 x 15 x 18) before and both fish were as healthy as any I have seen.IMO tank size only makes up for half the equasion.Filtration and the keepers house cleaning routine makes up the rest.

Thank you Greenterra, as I have said it is possible but filtration is need in massive quantities. I, along with most of us, wouldn't try it but it is still quite possible.

There is a definite problem when only talking with volume. Take a 6x2x2 (aka 180) this is a great sized tank for any aquarist. If I am going to keep a Jardini this tank it is ment to be good for life. Now if I was to increase the tank by 6" to make it a bit wider for the Jar it would increase the volumn by 25%, this would be the same if I increased and made it 6" higher. All the extra water, but with no benifit for the fish as Aros don't need the extra hight.

Dimensions should always be given, different deminsions suit different fish. But using gallons doesn't show how big (or small) the tank truely is.

Oscars will not thrive in too small of tanks and are prone to HITH. The only reason it is so common to have this is because people dont know how to properly house them, aka too small of tanks=foul water. Oscars need pristine water and space to thrive and live a FULL life 10+ years. Anything is possible I guess but its should be a crime to stuff 3 Oscars in a 60 gallon, or one in a 55g.

DAM you guys in Austrailia are lucky. but still. if you stock your tank like the trust and then stock a 60g with 3 oscars you will see the difference.
i think a 75 g for one oscar and +40 for other oscars is a bit too much. i think a good rule 55 g for one oscar +30 for the rest.

I think the only way it would be possible to do this with 3 oscars and not have to change water almost daily would be to use a large sump.

Lol, I'd do it. =D But I'm Asian, and that's my opinion. XD Lol, and oscar aggression is overrated. Compared to jags and other large cichlids, oscars are pansies. The only way that one might die due to aggression is if two of them pair up. But, if a pair of oscars can't even kill a jag less than half their size, I doubt they'd be able to kill another oscar. Besides, it'll work fine if you are raising them all from a juvi stage to adulthood. Would have no trouble then.

Three is a bad number, with Oscars I recommend 2 or more then 3. This stops the aggresion of two against 1, which doesn't really bother them that much anyway. My 3 fight, 2v1 and the one that is ganged up on just keeps swimming back to the other two for more. Renteria what is the difference between 3 O's in a 60 and the trusts tank, sure the tank is smaller but so is the size and number of fish in the tank. Im sure if you work out % of fish vs water the 60 will fair better.

To do this you would need a good sump and a good water change regiment. Test the Nitrate levels to determine how often water changes need to be done would bethe best bet, multiple times a week I would assume.

oscars can be aggressive. i grew up two of mine in the same tank and one day they started fighting like crazy. you cannot have 3 giant fighting fish in a small tank. it does not mix. this should have been a yes no question. today, a lot of oscars are put in a 20g for life. we should be educating people on how you cannot do that to a fish, not argueing to see if it is alright to cram big fish in a small tank. no dought if you do this all of the fish will be miserable and unhappy.
