Yay new 75 gal planted tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wattage doesn't tell me anything, without knowing what type of lighting it is. 216W of incandescent wouldn't do anything for plants. 216W of LED and you will need a ton of co2. As I said earlier, co2 is going to gas off in huge amounts because of you choice of filter. Personally, I would have skipped the wet/dry filter. Not a good choice for planted tanks that intend to have co2.

quite unfortunate that they don't work together. Guess I kinda missed that when they say wet/drys are excellent for oxygenating the water that should of said that would also be excellent for gassing off co2. O well I'll figure out a way to make it work. That's my policy though. Make it work. As far as the light information I got a 216 watt solar HO t5 fixture from catalina aquarium. I've read quite a few good reviews on it and it seemed to be a good price so I got it.

CA's products are sub par in my experience. With that much lighting you will need co2. You are going to waste quite a bit though. Where normally you would bubble 3-5 bps for that kind of lighting, you will need 20-30bps.

Research first, action second.

I have to disagree with WyldFya about the Catalina lights. They are not Teks for sure, but they beat anything even close to their price range. I think their other products are lower grade than their lights though.

He is right about the filter and co2 though. Something else you can try for a while would be to use Flourish Excel instead of co2. A 75 gallon is pretty big for excel because it can get expensive buying the small bottles at the lsf. But if you buy the big bottles online, it isn't too bad. Then as your budget allows, you can get a good canister filter.

That is going to be a lot of light, so start kind of slow and make sure you have a lot of good plant growth before you really start adding a lot of light.

I think you are going to have a great set up. Good luck.

Thank you sir. I was considering using flourish excel before I decided to use co2. I found a place to purchase the large bottles relatively cheap. Based on the dosages they recommend on the bottle it would cost me something like 15 bucks a month or so if I dosed it every day. So not too bad except over the long run cheaper to go with the injection. But that also depends if the dosage they recommend is enough for the tank and also depends how often I have to fill the co2 tank over compensating for the gas off from the wet/dry. Debating a blend of the two. It will work. The tank has no choice. It's going to work and it's going to like it. :D

Oh another exciting piece of news... my discus made like Wonder and bread wooooo! Not sure how many are going to make it though they are youngish and my experience with other cichlids tells me the first spawn of a young pair is not always successful. Everywhere I read they say average breeding size is closer to 6-8 inches. Mine are only 4" or so. Regardless I am quite excited. Hope I have some babies I have so many names picked out already!

With discus size doesn't mean much. Usually from 12-14 months is when they begin breeding. With how easy these fish are to stunt, size is not a good measurement for when they will be ready.

Not too much, they still will produce viable babies, that can still grow to full potential.
