Well i changed to Africans due to my source water parameters, so far i have a venustus, yellow lab, and red peacock. Poetically should have investigate them all first but not sure where else to go next. Don't want to do a bunch of trial and rehoming if i can avoid it.

What size is the tank?

48x18 90 gallon
That’s a decent size for rifties, I’d get rid of the venustus though, they get big and can be rambunctious. If you stick to less aggressive mbuna and peacocks and smaller haps you should be good, try to avoid look alikes . This is a 75 I have with 12 fish, but it started with 18 and i whittled it down for compatibility reasons.

tbh, I kinda hate bettas lol they're so overused and the keepers are terrible
I agree, and many seem to have bad genetics. I tried to get into bettas and got a black dragon placket and it died because it grew nasty tumors and so I tried another and it inexplicably died after doing well for 4 months. I do like the wild type and maybe that’s what I should’ve got

if they're at a chain pet store like petsmart or something they're very likely gonna die quickly, they're kept so badly their whole lives
