Zero Nitrates, no water change,. This is aquarium 2021.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also little bit confused which products did you use? You mention Artichar and Biochar there are too many confusing options and they are expensive and not half the cost of a regular charcoal we buy
By regular charcoal, are you referring to barbecue grill briquettes or activated carbon? An aquarium specific char is not currently advertised for sale. As we custom cook it for bulk orders. It's still in the R n D stages. I can send you some to experiment with if your interested.

Was referring to activated charcoal we purchase for fish tank filter use. Makes sense that I cannot find it since its a product in development

Looks like the carbon in aquariums is catching on. The Arti Char for aquariums might be a little behind the competition.

But we can make it very affordable. Once we get going with it. Currently I just built a 48" x 96" x 36" biochar filter for a commercial fish pond. I cant imagine a fish farmer paying $100.00 per gallon to fill up his filter.

ARTI Char will be considerable less than activated carbon.

How well does activated carbon work for your tank?

i actually axed it from my filters last year when I read that there is inconsistent information out there on the product itself saying it might be viable for a day or a week so i removed it and have not noticed a difference however since removal suspecting it was true it was only viable for a day or two. I wanted more depth in providing cleaner quality water in between to my water change routine so added more sponge and biomedia instead of the carbon. I used carbon all of the time when I had my old fish room. Swore by it. Now I wonder if it was just because I did more water changes. That was at least a decade ago when I was last in the hobby until 2019 when I slowly got back into it not surprised if the same activated carbon i was using would have had changed in quality vs a decade ago too.

I am still learning as I go. Where I work at we pyrolysis every thing from chicken litter, grain, wood chips, nuts, textiles, rubber tires. Some of it makes good filtration char others only good at off setting carbon credits.
It's a highly technical science. It's all carbon but just as graphite and diamonds are both carbon. Different chars have different properties.

Last year I filled my 8gal home-fabricated canister with a bamboo charcoal from the farmer down the road. Results have been a fascinating mixed-bag, but I'm generally very very happy with it, particularly once it aged a bit. She'd love to start selling it beyond me & the orchid ladies if anybody's interested in being a hub/distributor :)
