Zero Nitrates, no water change,. This is aquarium 2021.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will probably increase the flow, I wanted to see if new biochar would, increase nitrate from residual nitrogen or something else???

Got a couple of new batches to trial. Trying to find the perfect mix. Last week
I only maintained a 7 ppm. I was trying to reach zero last week. The last time I got to zero, I had the char in filter socks with full flow.

I have a few more questions as I get closer to trying this:

Does it matter if the reactor goes before or after the bio media? I know some anaerobic bacteria feeds off of ammonia, so it has to go before the bio media.

Do you find that flow matters?

What dosage/amount of biochar would you recommend per gallon?

How long did you have the reactor running before you started to notice results?

I have not yet brought biochar to test in a canister filter.

my question is how do I know it is spent or still viable to change it out? And it is added to the soil outside? i am still doing my regular water changes though.

Also little bit confused which products did you use? You mention Artichar and Biochar there are too many confusing options and they are expensive and not half the cost of a regular charcoal we buy

Once it is saturated nitrates will increae.

The use char can be mixed into the soil for gardening, or mixed with peat to make a potting soil. I have been experimenting with planting with straight biochar .
