What's a good guard dog?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
+1 on shelter dogs and kids. get a 50 buck pup that comes with shots, or a AKC papered one if you can afford.

One of the most memorable dog in my life was a white pit bull from the shelter. That dog was an angel.

I came home today and found out that my apt got broken into. Thank God no one was was hurt, as my preg. wife must have left the apt less than an a hour before some ass#%^* decided to break in. I asked my wife if she wanted me to purchase a gun or a dog and she opted for the dog. My question is what's a good family dog that's still a good protector? I have two kids and a baby on the way, so the dog would have to be kid friendly. My wife doesn't want a pit, or rotty. How would a lab or German Shepard do? Also my kids have a rabbit, are there an dogs that wouldn't kill their rabbit?

Wow, I just went exactly what you went thru yesterday and now I'm also looking for a dog. This thread is really helpful, thanks!! I already have a much clearer idea of what I want because of the info in this thread. Ive liked Rotts, and it sounds like they may be what I want. The members here are soo knowledgeable. I wanted to ask if all these traits are the same in male and female. Also, this will be my gfs first dog. Will we be better off with a male dog vs female? I've heard of dogs becoming jealous, is that common? Thanks again guys!

For a personal companion guard dog, go FEMALE.

Does exactly the same function. Does not want to dominate you as an alpha male.

Is attached the same to you without the males need to attempts at independence.

This is exactly what I wanted to know.
Thanks a million Miguel :)

So I've put the word out and last night a good friend of mine tells me his grandparents breed Cane Corso.
I have some reservations regarding these types of breeds, just being in southern California you see a lot of stupidity, BUT my friend assured me they are long time breeders and I would be free to drive out and visit the parents and puppies once they are born, I guess they're expecting a litter.
Honestly I have most experience with my friends pitt bulls. Ive been most impressed and really love the loyalty of the breed, specifically the females. For that reason I think Im going to choose a female dog. It also seems the females are less boisterous than the males.
Could anyone give me more ideas as to what to look for if I do go out and meet the parents? Are there any Cane Corso owners or someone who has experience with
them who could chime in? Thanks guys

Make sure parents are accepting of strangers but not overly so. Cane corso are a true guardian breed that need correct handling or you've got yourself a very dangerous animal. A former coworker of mine from my animal shelter has a male. Love the breed but needs a lot of socialization so they grow into adults who aren't overly protective and understand when to be protective

You cannot go wrong with Cane Corso. One of the best personal guard dogs one can have the luck to bond with.

A true jewel.

A girl of mine once stopped a whole herd of wild cows ( not bulls, mind ) converging on me and a couple of my, at the time, toddler boys. Shejust stopped them and protected us.

Mine, young and old

Me with her and another love of my life...and a couple that live here in the vicinity.
