Thanks, when I first got my Oscar. It was but an inch long and had like 5 spots on each side. She sure has changed a lot since then.

Beauty Dempsies. I can’t seem to get mine to darken up. He/she is more tan most of the time. Have you ever noticed this in yours? I’m thinking it’s my lighting or maybe still adjusting as I have only had the Cichlid for a month.
My females colors varies depending on her mood and how close her mate is to her.
She goes from this, when he is not around.
To this when he is around.
So yes their color can change and drastically. Give plenty of hides, mine like dimmer lights.

Ok thanks! I have plenty of room and plenty of hides I must have a female she looks just like your first picture but darkens up when the lights are off. I may have to find a male since I love the darker colour. However I worry if they mate my other cichlids will go to battle haha. Sorry for highjacking your thread, again beautiful fish.
It's easy to sex JDs. Look at the area under it's eye sweeping back to the gill plate.
If there is a lot of blue like a (Beard) then it's female. The males have no to very little blue there.
