ALL of the African cichlids in this thread, were raised on an exclusive diet of NLS cichlid, and large fish formula.

I shut down my last African tank this week, sent them off to a friends fish room where they will live out their lives in his 270 gallon display tank. I got to thinking about all of the various African cichlids that I have kept over the years and started going though my HD for photos. I thought that I would share some of those here. Keep in mind the vast majority of these photos were taken with a $20 point & shoot. The fish looked a lot nicer in person. :)

The Stendker discus in these photos were raised on NLS cichlid formula. Other than some blood worms a couple times a week, they ate NLS cichlid formula exclusively.

Awesome looking fish RD. I love how discus look but I won't be able to keep up with maintenance. Thinking about next tank to be of African cichlids.

Just an FYI regarding color - most quality foods have plenty enough color enhancing agents in their regular formulas, you really don't need to feed those with "extra" red color enhancing agents. If you do, you should probably be looking closer at the genetics of your fish, than the food you are feeding. Just sayin ......

Those food do still serve some purpose right? Or should they be considered marketing tactic? Ultra red costs around twice of basic formula, so I am thinking more krill (I don't know)?

My guy is 6 inches give or take now. How often should I be feeding?
I’d do two feeding’s a day and at the end of the last feeding his stomach should have no more than a slight bulge. Observe and estimate the amount. You could fast one day the week if you wanted too also.

A mega amount of astaxanthin, not just a marketing tactic. My point was that with quality genetics, one shouldn't need to feed those kind of levels of astaxanthin for the color red to look good.

The cichlid below was fed regular NLS cichlid formula. Red enough? :)
