120g Saltwater Fish Tank!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In such a big tank clowns would be relatively easy to look after. volitan wont work with them but there are dwarf lions you can look at.
You really need to decide what you wanna do yaself. We cant tell you whether to go SW or fresh although an arro will get to big for the tank if that helps. I wouldnt even put a silver in a 180 although i personally have a jardini in a 180 but they get smaller.
SW is for expensive and slightly more work but is def worth it.

And no table salt. You have to buy marine salt from LFS. If you wanna do SW buy a book or browse this sight alot more looking for questions you wanna know and then read the answers they got.

I got a book, and I am doing Sw, i got tons of live rock, and sand, just waiting for the water to get clearer and more accilimated. Going to add the fish probably in an hour.

i meqant just make sure you're not adding freshwater on top of the LR. the salinity difference would kill the bact. add saltwater to the tank, not FW and then salt.

yeah my salinity right now is about 14, tomarrow I am getting instant ocean, probably going ot try to trade in some live rock for it, ig ot about 40 pds that i am not putting into the tank. The owner also didn't have any filter media inside the sump so I am deciding weather to get just the bio balls or make it a w/d with different stuff.

Right now the tank is running with mixture of saltwater and tapwater with conditioner half/half and like 50 pds of live sand too. Everything is running great, the sump is about 30-40 gallons, and the pump is really strong same with the spraybars or w.e, their are 2, one on each side of the overflow box.

The fish are inside a 10g tub that has 1 large live rock in their, a snail, small crab, the 3 fish, and i just fed them some marine flakes, and an airstone. I have the cover semi on but i dont think any will jump... I am not going to put them into till probably tomarrow night, they should be fine and they are all swimming around nicely now. Especially the batfish who looks happy and just needs to recover from scraping on the live rock too much.

I hope STrickty Fish, my lfs takes the Live Rock for some $$ it's dried but the ones they sell are dry also... and i have like 10 peices and some are really large. easily 30 pounds all together, and they sell fuji live rock for 5.99/lbs so hopefull i can get maybe 50$ for them and I will be happy. 2$ a piece.

I am planning on getting a skimmer in 2 months. I have a hydrometer, 300 w heater, GREAT Coralife 260watt lights, 4 of the lights are blueish and 4 are white, and the background is like painted black. I am really satisfied, the guy just wanted us to remove it from his house, because his landlord was going to charge him 2K if he left it their ( he is moving ) so win / win situation! I will keep you updated w/ pics as soon as possible.

i would suggest a bigger tub but hey you do what you gotta do with what ya got. im glad to see that they are eating that's always a good sign.

yeah I was going to put them into a new thing yesterday.... but the i dont want to move the fish anymore until i put them int he main tankwhich could be in a few days, they seem fine in the container, the only thing is the batfish scares me when he like lies sideways and stuff but now he was eating yesterdy too so they all are looking well.

I am going to the fish store today, any advice on something i should get besides a protein skimmer and salt, I got chemicals and food, and a hydrometer and stuff, i am also getting filter media too. I was thinking using live rock in the sump to keep the bacteria.

yeah LR is best for sumps.
do have have the test kits?

yes I have the test kits, i put the live rock inside the tank, got some filter floss, and layed it on the top layer, got some egg crate aswell, and 2 gallons of bio balls, they were 9.99 per gallon...... and got salt mix and my salinity is 26 now =D=D the fish are in, eating, and looking great. The owner of the tank was stupid he onl yhad flake foood, and the overflow is sooo strong it sucks almost all of it in... I filled all the live rock in the tank, tomarrow I gotta buy some Granule food, and yes i have the testing stuff, and need to retock on chemcials, the previous owner knew nothing about fish keeping in general.... but i was told these fish are 7 years old.

You think i should get a protein skimmer in 2 mo, and which one so i know how much $$ i have to save up =D and im not adding fish for a few weeks... mayb some invert soon to clean the algea off of the tank that the damn reeflights make...

What kind of protein skimmer should I get, thanks! I am thinking one that HOS or in the Sump, but Hang on Sump is better.

cant edit,

My dad doesn't let me leave the pump on during the night due to the loud noise, do you thinkt he fish will be okay without the filter on? I leave the airstone on and it is really strong but thats about it during the night which is 11-6 for me.
