2 Bettas in a 55?

I got these from my mother-in-law. Right now they're each in their own 1.5 gal tanks. I'll put them in the 55 on Friday and see how they do. If there's any fighting I'll simply pull one out and put it back in one of the betta tanks.
One quick question that comes to mind now is which one should I put in first? The male or the female?

I'd say the female to let her find out where some hiding places are before the male does, unless she's got a little size on him but I'd still probably say the female. It's just courtesy.. or chivalry, whatever you want to call it.
 
very true, I should add the male I had with the females was from a tank with other types of fish. After his passing I bought another male from a cup and he had to be put in a 5 gal because he wouldn't stop being aggressive towards the females, they were pretty big and old so he just got whomped too bad to let go on.

i would definatley put the female in first and allow her to establish a territory and or find places to hide BEFORE you try the male. i done that with agressive fish like damselsand it seems to work pretty good.
 
females can most likely swim faster than males. with enough caves, plants, and escape routes, it may work.

Here's where they'll be living. I think there's plenty of plants and driftwood in there. ;)
There's also caves. You can see one in the bottom left corner. I made them out of rocks and silicone.

thats a really nice setup, If bettas are the way you want to go with that tank I'd get a lot of females, and a small male, that has got to be one of the nicer natural looking tanks, great stuff. So you siliconed stones together to make caves? I'm afraid I'm going to have to steal your idea.
 
Well I got home this morning and found the male betta dead in his tank. Not sure why he died. Since he's now swimming in the local sewer system I decided to go ahead and add the female to the tank today. So far there's no problems.
 
Even though it means nothing now, On a show on animal planet, i saw that when two male bettas were added to a huge lake. They found each other and started fighting. But when there's a group with a leader, they don't fight at all.
