500 Gallon Peacock Bass Aquarium

Correction, FX5 failed again. Nothing in the impeller, turns freely, not sure what going on. Went ahead and replaced with another motor. The motor that won't start is dated 07/06, and I had used it for 2 years purchased new. Appears it sat around for a while, but surprised it would fail after just 2 years of running. I'll take it apart, but probably will end up having to replace since it appears to be electronic issue.

A lot of hard water precipitates on the magnetic shaft and motor sleeve. Perhaps the torque required was too big for the impeller to spin. Used descaling solution for a coffee maker to get everything off. Motor runs now, will rinse out really really well then try on a filter when cycling the big tank. Hopefully this is all it is.

A couple of pictures of the stand bracing in place, hence completed structural framing.

Friends who helped me with the tank and stand came back over to help replace 1/2 of the styrofoam under the tank that was indeed several millimeters thinner than the other side. Once in place, the tank is level in both directions, and does not rock independent of the stand. I am quite confident that all stand issues are resolved and its ready to do its job. Hopefully I will be back in the tank in several days for a good cleaning and continuing polishing.

Finally finding time this weekend to continue working. Polishing should be wrapped up within the next week. One outstanding question in my mind is if I should paint the glued in acrylic background (blue to black). Krylon Fusion now has a brush on version that makes be think about changing it. The previous owner used the tank as SW setup, so I can understand blue, just for me I would prefer black. With the brush on I was thinking that masking and painting would only add a little bit of time (I have plenty of other things to be done though), but I am concerned with using an algae pad on the paint. If it comes off it will be a real pain. Any thoughts?

Also starting to think about how to install filtration system the most effectively, lots of ideas and hopefully something more concrete in the next week.

The orinos are all doing good, lots of growth as the bigger ones are already approaching 3" and the smallest are still over 2". Targeting to have the 500 cycled sometime in late July/early August. Wife and baby will be out of town for the final three weeks of July so I will be able to accomplish things more quickly.

One question regarding feeding, I'm currently doing bloodworm/crushed pellet approach. How long does the process of transitioning take from your experience? Should I expect weeks, months? I' m guessing its rather unique to each setup, for me it has been a week so far, I see a few hits here and there, but a lot of avoiding and spitting too.

I have/had ten quarter sized Dats, now they are 4 to 5", that would not get off of live food. The tank has Bala's and Silver Dollars in it also. As soon as the Dats saw the other fish eating the pellets they seemed to go after them also. There was a lot of spitting out and so on but I only fed enough for the fish eating so the Dats got really hungry and finally started pounding the pellets. As soon as the first Dat took a pellet the rest started. Soon after they started eating pellets the growth started, every time I walked by the tank I was able to feed. Maybe 5 times a day I was putting massivor into the tank. It seems like they learn from each other? Full bellies and high temps really put on the weight. A friend of mine was over today (Kevin Fleming) and was amazed at how big the Dats are getting.
Keep them hungry but don't starve them. I always made sure they had a little bit of blood worms in there belly. I think that makes the hunger pain worse and promotes a stronger feeding response.

I've put together a rough idea of what I am thinking for the filtration system. Would appreciate input on possible problems or room for improvements.
