500 Gallon Peacock Bass Aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have a 450 with 2 fx5's and a eheim 2080 - and i will be adding a sump...

i recommend 2 fx5's and a nice 60-100gal sump for bio and filter socks....

the fx5's simply dont have enough bio and fall short on finer mech filtration....

if you want particle free crystal clear water, imo, 3 fx5's arent going to cut it

Thanks for your input from your experience. Your tank stocking is awesome!

I know sumps can have a lot of advantage over canister, and canister is just my preference. Sumps can have a lot more bio filtration because they can be bigger, but what makes you say your FX5 setup did not have enough bio? Especially when using sand as you did.

In the past I have not had a problem polishing, the debris I had was algae taken care of by the UV filter. One of the extra ports I am considering for temporary polishing using a filter sock intake to the FX5's.

Thanks!

Still polishing, probably should fill it with water and look at scratches so I stop being such a perfectionist when its dry.

Couple pics of the 10 pack, including a couple of two spot orinos. Anyone have a full grown pic of a two spot?

They are starting to put on a little bit of size, largest are between 3.5-4 inches, so they'll be moving to their new home in just under a month.

they look great! I too would use a 100g+ sump on that tank as well. Fx5 maintanance can be a pain....and sumps are much more effective because of their size and ease of cleaning.

get a big sump, leave a large compartment free with water running through it, thats how lol

The issue here is the sump is still smaller than the tank so water flow is greater through the sump. For example a 100 gallon sump on a 500 gallon tank the water flow through the sump is going to be 5X the water flow through the tank and that's if the sump is filled to the max. Most sumps are filled only half way to account for the extra water from power failures or pump issues. The OP’s example, the 100 gallon sump (filled halfway) will have 10X the flow as the 500 gallon tank. There won’t be any grow out activities going on, the fish will be using all their energy to just stay out of the pumps impellor blades. J

Going on a week long trip tomorrow, paranoid to have someone else watch the 10 pack, but he knows what he's doing so I hope everything goes smoothly. This week has been mostly working through some design ideas, when I get back it will be the final push to get their new home setup!

One question has arisen: what is the simplest way to mount driftwood upside down to look like roots from above? There will be a glass top, so I can't mount it a platform and lay it across the span, not crazy about having to drill into the top to secure it. I guess I could use silicone? Would appreciate a brilliant idea!
