Slate will not create the nooks and crannies when stacked. Round rocks with 40 pounders on the bottom create great cracks/crevices when stacked. As mentioned, the fish like really tight spaces.

I had to go back through your posts to see which fish you actually bought.

If you are asking about the Paralabidochromis sp. 'red fin piebald' they are a maternal mouthbrooder. The female will drop an egg, the male will fertilize, the female will pick up the egg then repeat the process until they are done.

What was the other species you bought?

Had an idea for my granite, I’ve got a 1” bit and 4” hole saw. I could make Swiss cheese granite...

I’d presume 2” is probably ideal... have to buy a bit but , 20-30 holes in a few rocks could make lots of Victoria Cichlid condos....

I’m not trying to create a fish farm...

I do have a 75g/10g and could easily convert a 5g to their ph....

Flint town!
If you dont want to raise the fry just let nature take its course. Some may survive.

I like the holes idea. Or you should be able to stacke it to make natural caves and crevices.

Ya, I had a plan for fry, trade them to LFS guys for supplies....

I’ll probably sort the granite as the snow melts here and grab a 2” hole saw....

I would make the holes bigger than 2". Why spend hours and $$ on drill bits and breathing rock dust when a pile of rocks would be more natural and cheaper and more effective for the fish?

Often the LFS cannot take all 20 (or more) at the same time and eventually the market becomes saturated. The trade value is 1/3 the retail price in general.

Standard hole saws will not work for drilling rock so you need to rethink that plan.

There is also a danger when using rocks with holes that are too small as adult fish can become trapped in small holes.

I would just wait until you can find a place to buy cheap rocks rather than continue to spend money on the aquarium types you've been buying. I don't know where you are exactly but there has to be a commercial place that sells rocks, large stones and small boulders that would much cheaper and more natural looking plus give you options to change up the placement of any rocks.
