75g Looking to start African Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Id start hitting that granite with an 8lb sledge hammer to make the size more manageable. Try stacking it up, you could silicone chunks together if you are worried about it falling. You should be able to make something pretty nice with all that.

When designing a new rock scape I use a bench and not a tank. Just mask out the footprint. That way I can stare at it over several days and tweak to my heart's content, then take pics so it is easy to quickly reproduce in the tank when ready.

Do you not have a local place to buy rocks cheaper?

I called 3-5 landscaper yards and they did not have and honey comb limestone...

Guess I’ll deal with this until I can sink $500 via eBay....

Few more pics,

I’m liking these Africans!

I like the fact they only get 4” or so, lot more versatility...

You got the hardscape looking good. It will look even better when algae coats the rocks.
DJRansome DJRansome I use the "Never Satisfied" method of hardscape design. Once I complete a pretty good rock stacking, my mind locates some minor flaw. At that point choosing to relocate or remove the offending rock leaves a void, which requires moving five other rocks. You know where I'm going with this. LOL.

You will not find (easily) holey rock much outside of Texas. Personally I don't like holey rock because it does not occur in the lake and it has rough edges that can injure fleeing fish. Plus expensive and hard to get. And white will get coated with algae. Just ask for any boulders...river rock or field stone for building walls. I have found phone representatives at these places don't realize customer service is a component of their job...better just to visit and browse.

I figured as much, the sand (black/tan mix) for the other 75 is coming in the mail. I imagine as the snow melts here I’ll get our a bit more to the rural areas where these places are and have a gander....

I like the round stones but not ideal for stacking, the flat slate like pieces seem easy to work with and stack...

I could get heaps of granite strips and build a very square cave system...

Thanks all!
