75g Looking to start African Tank

Standard hole saws will not work for drilling rock so you need to rethink that plan.

There is also a danger when using rocks with holes that are too small as adult fish can become trapped in small holes.

I would just wait until you can find a place to buy cheap rocks rather than continue to spend money on the aquarium types you've been buying. I don't know where you are exactly but there has to be a commercial place that sells rocks, large stones and small boulders that would much cheaper and more natural looking plus give you options to change up the placement of any rocks.

yup,

did you see the pic up there?

got a large makita and various concrete bits, have 4”currently, used to tie into storm water...

Obviously would not use a wood bit on concrete....

No problem, when I see hole saw I assume just a regular one unless it's specified as 'special'.

Since you will not be able to take the big slab full of holes apart if a fish dies or is sick or holding of someone you want to remove is just hiding in there, you will need something big enough to get your hand in. I don't see how you can make this truly practical.

Good point, I’d have to remove each rock condo piece....

think I’m good for now,

think I’ve disrupted the 6 territories and made a contiguous reef of fake holey rock, they are also hunkering down under the sponge filters,

looks like only 3 males or so are trying to claim areas....

the M lutea are all 1” or less....

The sand comes this week sometime.... gonna scout the landscaping yards in person next week...

thanks everyone!

I've also used these when I couldn't find good rocks. 2 pretty much filled a 4ft tank, end to end they make a nice reef and the are easy to move if you need to.

Helpful!

I’ll have a glance at them next time I’m in PetSmart...

What’s the best process with the mouth brooding females? Take them out and put them in separate tank solo until they spit out babies, or milk the mothers mouth to expel the babies ?

Not sure what the survival Hope is in the main tank?

Also they are making mounds of sand, this due to territories or?

Thanks!

Cichlids will always move substrate. I assume it is marking territories or building nesting areas. I personally let all of my females spit in the main tank. Survival of the fittest. Most do not make it which is what I am hoping for otherwise I would be overrun with dry.

I got the fry / mom tank rolling. I wouldn’t mind seeing a few.

Each female home 20 or so per round of breeding?

I’d see how they could add up

Each species is different in the amount of fry per spawn. I can’t comment on the piebald as I have never owned them. Typically the first few spawns are smaller with mouth brooders so I wouldn’t expect that many first go around but I could be wrong there. I am also not a fan of stripping cichlids so I have only done that aspect a few times.
I found that most local fish stores don’t want locally bred fish unless they can establish the lineage and if they do want them it is usually for store credit.
