I feed my puffer earthworms (live), krill, snails, frozen bloodworms, and occasionally some clams. Mine will eat frozen brine shrimp too, although I can tell its least liked than the other foods. Some live shrimp once in awhile is good too. As someone mentioned, buy some earthworms from a bait store, walmart, sporting goods store etc. Or you can buy a tupperware/rubbermaid type bin (few bucks), poke some holes in the lid, and add some shredded newspaper. Then buy a few hundred worms online and have your own little earthworm farm. I recommend red wigglers.

They are very easy to care for and multiply like crazy. I also second the comment about raising/breeding snails. I recommend pond snails and ramshorns. The pond snails are small and good size for your puffer right now, but later you are going to want to use ramshorns, they are a bit bigger.

I got 1000 earthworms online & have never had to buy any more. They get all my leftover fruit, coffee grinds, etc.

That's pretty cool. You just keep them In a tub full of dirt and things?

Shredded paper is perfect for bedding. And then you throw them all your waste like fruits, veggies, garden clippings, etc. They eat anything except meat, bones, dairy, metal, rubber, and plastic. You spray their bedding to keep them moist and then put the bin away in a dark area. I have mine in my closet. My bin is 16x11x6 and currently has about 500 worms in there.

Hmmm that sounds like a good idea. Only question, any smell? I would imagine They do. May throw it in my garage if that's the case. They reproduce quick enough?

No smell really unless you put your nose like an inch or 2 from them. Just don't overfeed them. Start out small, and then a week later check the food. If its gone then you know you could add more. If you check a week later and see food still you gave them too much.

It is better to feed too little than too much. Yes they reproduce pretty fast. If you are only feeding them to your puffer. And lets say, you give the puffer about 2-3 a week. You'd want atleast a 100 worms to sustain the population. I bought 50 worms from a sporting goods store and knew I was going to run out. So I just ended up buying a pound of worms online (about 1000 worms).

I have several bins and I separated them. In my main personal bin I keep about 500 and the other 2 bins have roughly 250 worms each. Those I put away to grow into more worms and in about 8-12 weekes there will be 500+ worms in those bins. Then I plan to sell them with the bins.

Thats the good thing with the worms. You can spread them out and make other bins. The worms do all the work and multiply for you. You can also use their compost for gardening stuff. Reason I bought so many worms is cause I now have more animals to feed that like worms. I got plenty worms to last me and I won't run out. In fact, I have too many worms.

Wow, well, I only have my little puffer, so a colony of around 100 sustaining itself would be pretty much perfect since Id only use roughly 12 a month. Let me know if you wanna get rid of a bin!

Yes they do actually. Ill have to go take a look.

Perfect. Go to a 99 cent store and buy a cheap little tupperware. Poke some holes in the lid, add some shredded newspaper, spray it with dechlorinated water. Then buy your worms. You should be set then.

BTW the newspaper should be as moist as a wrung out sponge. Check on the worms weekly to check for their moisture level. Also start adding small pieces of food to the bin. I would give them no more than a table spoon size worth of food. And even by the end of the week they may still have some left. If you see food still do not add anymore. Don't worry the worms will not die if they don't have food for like a week or two. They also feed off their bedding. The most important thing though is they have to have moisture in their bedding at all times. And weekly you should fluff/flip their bedding.
