Advice on Green Terror for new American Cichlid owner

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All signs point to male. But not guaranteed for awhile, I've been dooped before.
Thanks man I appreciate the response. Any pointers on a nice Nuchal hump? I know it’s mainly genetics but any thing else I can do if it is a male?

You're asking the wrong guy about nuchal humps, my male has yet to develop one and I"m not convinced he will.

I'm pretty sure with GT that it is a dominance thing rather than every male gets one. So if you had it in a tank with another male and female, the dominant male would most likely grow a humper.

BTW, my guess of male is solely based on the fin shape and body coloration of the pics you posted. These are not accurate ways to sex, just an educated guess. Typically males show more lighter colors and their pattern kinda makes it look like horizontal barring down the body length. They have the pointier fins and sometimes develop longer trailers that extend past the tail fin. But females can have pointy fins too as you will see with my female.

Here is pics of my breeding pair for comparison, its pretty night and day with mine, but I have seen some pics of females that I would've bet good money were male. Only 100% way to determine is to vent (and know what you're looking at) or observe egg laying. It is said that females will lay eggs regardless of males being present, but my female never did for 2 years until i added the male, they paired up damn near instantly.

Male Top
Female Bottom

When the fry get to free swimming stage she goes nuclear for a few days and she won't even let the male near the fry, backs him up into the upper corner on the other side of the tank. He's kinda a wuss TBH.

They’re really nice fish man. What do you do with the fry if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve always been curious as to what people do with all those babies.

P.S. here’s a better picture of mine since he’s calmed down a bit.

So far I have off-loaded 25 of them to a LFS where I live. I sold 10 to an individual and I have about 10 left that I'm growing out in hopes of getting a nice male.

My second batch is in a 40gallon breeder growing out, there is probably 50+ in there, but still very small, less than 1''.

There is also a very small batch still in with the parents currently, I will let them ride it out as long as the parents will let them because honestly it will get to the point that I will have to start giving them away if they keep breeding.

Thanks for the compliment, He is a good lookin fish. Your juvenile looks to have potential. Clean water, lots of space, quality foods and the least amount of stress will grow him into a stunner

Updated photo after a bad bout with ich. His or her tail is still growing back from when my fish were sick and became dull but color is getting better everyday.

Are the signs still pointing towards a male?
His dorsal fin is also growing back.
