Yep you'll see that when a shark attack has occurred they will close beaches within a mile of each direction for 24-48hrs but the area I mentioned, there hasn't been an attack for 10yrs but signs remain.

While I don't hold these parents nearly as at fault as the gorilla pit mother....I feel as if common sense should have prevailed here...you are near fresh water in a state where big reptiles rule...watch your kids a little more closely...you aren't in Nebraska anymore....Hell I'm from a state with like...2 animals that can kill you and I'm still on my toes any time I visit Florida...if I had a kid he/she would have been chained to my hip
I hate judging the parents but your right i mean you are in florida right. Still feel like they should have had signs that stated alligators on site.
How deep was the water where the kid was playing ?
Signs should have had warning of no wading or swimming may be Alligator in the area. Also resort brochure should also state the Alligator warning in them. Disney imo is focused on how much money they can pull in from tourist that now they will pay for greed. Safety should always be first!
The thing about these super predators (gators/crocs) is that they often attack wary preys that are fully on land and just have their snout in the water just enough to lap a drink. A small, clueless child, even in an inch of water, stands no chance of ever seeing this deadly ambush.
Hello; I lived in North Carolina for a couple of years, near Southport. Around 40 miles north of Myrtle Beach. I fished in the lakes and small ponds. There were always gators or the chance of gators. They would sometimes take the fish off of the stringers while we were not far away. There may have been some warning signs but I do not recall seeing any. It was pretty much understood that any body of water could have them. My take is that any state in that area can and does have gators. Florida being further south with lots of natural habitat likely having more than most.
When in those southern areas you are going to get bitten by mosquitoes even in the winter. That was among the first surprises. I am from Kentucky and the mosquitoes are not around then. I was out one November near a lagoon and got covered by them.
There are also the no-see-ums to deal with. Some different types of venomous snakes. Some small plants growing along the road side that would form spikes enough to flat a bicycle tire.
People swim in the ocean and should know there are sharks. In the south there are gators. It seems that some reports have said there were warning signs posted in the area where the child was taken. Not sure what the signs said. If the word gator (alligator) was on them, then that would have kept me out of the water.

Yes! Fear factor, they risked the reputation of Disney. Most beaches post shark warning signs and tourist still come, and people are aware of their surroundings. I know I would appreciate what is the reason I can't swim in the water.
I believe the signs only said no swimming. I think this being at Disneyworld, they should not have sugar coated it and plainly stated on the sign that there were possible alligators. There are so many signs at amusement parks that say do not enter and no touching, the parents probably thought nothing of it at the time.
