i just looked up alligator gars, and you are partially right, they dont get 13 feet, but im seeing on all the web sites 8-10 feet, and any fish that will only grow to 5 in the confines of a tank as opposed to 8 -10 in the wild really doesnt seem very good to me at all, and still , 5 feet, you would need like a tank at least 10 feet wide to acomadate the gar, which would still be in the 15,000 or more gallons, so i think my original statement is still valid. your argument is not very good Lepisosteus platyrhincus and i do caution people on getting pacus, not as bad as a giant gar or parroon shark, but i do caution them, they do get very large. and by the way, i work at a pet store, im not gonna say wich one in my area as i dont want to bring my work into this but i caution people all the time at my work

I just bought a Paroon. I like it, but in a little while I will have to find it a larger more suitable place to live. Until then I don't really see the harm. He just ate a bunch of feeders too, which I also don't see the harm in. Different strokes I guess. And don't get me wrong I understand that some people care for their fish like children, that's fine with me. It's admirable to treat them the best you can, I try to as well even if I can't house them for life. But essentially if it's for sale, it's already in the trade and has a death sentence, why not see to its last few years being exceptional? I had an opportunity to buy this fish from captivity and I did, even if I didn't it would still be in captivity, and that does not bother my ethics one bit. But I am also a seafood lover and have been known to filet fish straight out of water when im fishing so I guess it's hard for me to get too sentimental. I'm not objecting your desire to care for fish so perfectly, more your need to project that same degree of care into everyone else. Some people just aren't as militant about their fish keeping ethics.

props to you,

i mostly agree with you, i am housing a pretty taboo giant.. but i do have a 160 gal for him and have every intention on building a plywood pond in the basement when he gets big, i also have arrangements with local zoo to care for him if i fail.

theres something about the giants that really makes me love fish keeping, florida gar, redtail cat and arrows are my beasts, i care for them best i can and keep them fed properly.

i do on the other hand agree with the nature of this thread, it does hurt me to see the monster fish starving and unable to swim freely in some setups that do not meet their needs. Its unfair to the animal and it will live a poor life.

In fact, even though we all love fish, we're keeping them inevitably unhappy,

- trust me all our fish would be happier without us.

there are several people on here, possiblly more, who think im kind of an ass, mainly cause i never let anything i see which is harmful to fish, go, i always comment on it, even if they didnt ask, i know that can kind or seem nasty

I think your an ass because instead of answering the thread's post, you point out the obvious that has nothing to add to help answer the question of the thread.

You could however have a sugguestion without an answer to the thread but you dont. You just state the obvious once again and sound like an ass. Next time you respond to a thread in a way that has nothing to do with the thread, read and reread it again and maybe you wont look like a Jack Ass Troll with only the negatives to point out. Help us all learn without being a debbie downer. I just did a statistic search on all your posts and to little my surprise 90% of them were Negative opinions without any sugguestions. My tank is always half full. Maybe then you would not have to start this thread to see if your out of line?

one, type my name, dont copy and paste. 2 the reason it gets only about 5 feet in captivity is because of the time it takes to get 10 feet. my arguement is compltely valid. if ur gonna tell people the dangers of the fish, then get ur sizes right. congrats on warning people at ur work. i bet u feel great about that.

look all im saying is be nice and tell people they get huge. if ur gonna be, in ur own words, an ass about it then get ur sizes right and know the proper husbandry for that animal. other wise chime in and say they get large and shut up and stand in the corner.

Nicely put kind sir. Bravo.:headbang2

the reason i dont answer some of the actual questions in the threads is that the answer was already given multiple times by many other people, so, i mention something else, if the actual question has not been answered i dont post other things. and whats wrong with copy and pasting your name, i dont know why that would upset you. im also not sure what you mean by the time it takes them to get larger than 5 feet, are you saying that no one would ever keep a gar long enough for it to get 10 feet? and you are saying the same thing again, i corrected myself, they (alligator gars) get 10 feet, not 13. also, people are generally very happy when i give them advice about fish at my work, they commonlly say oh my god, i had no idea, thank you. im not gonna stop calling people out at all, i see no point in answering a question that has been answered multiple times, but i do see a point in pointing out mistakes. i also have another question, what do you do with your fish you admitadly cant take care of there whole lives, do you kill them when they get too big, i cant imagine too many pet stores that would take a 5 foot alligator gar. i am glad though to see that most people do agree with me, maybe people arent as horrible as i initially think, just some ( you know who you are). so, i will still be calling people out, but i will try my best to be diplomatic about it

It's tough to know where to draw the line on "informing" people. A lot of the times it's the LFS or the chain pet store that told them they can properly house the fish. That's where it becomes hard to decide when to lecture somebody or not. It's impossible to tell if the person knew before (Unless they brag about it). I do completely agree with you though. People need to do more research about the fish they want.

Always remember.... it is not about just telling them what they are doing wrong, it is about educating them so that they know better. Tact is the important part of the informational transmission.
yes! but ya one thing i never understand is people with a 300 getting a atf or gatf its just like why?
