Ammonia - Not enough Filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good luck with the issue bro! At least RTCs are very hardy and will handle the mini cycle ok. May I ask where you bought the tank from?

The tank he’s in currently is a Petco sale special 75g for $100...

The big tank that’s being built is a gentleman down in Sodo that aquarium co op referred me to.

This is where I’m at, 3rd FX 6 ? Total waste of $250... maybe could work a sump in there... been adding stability to boost BB

In addition to the 2 a fx 6’s got two 350’s and a Marineland inter canister with zeolite got plants on there too! Suppose I could get a sapling in there....

.25 - .5 ammo what ever the lightest green is, 2 - 50% water charges per week

I feed Talipa - 1 - 6oz or so piece per week. Every other day give few slices...

Gonna try purigen in HOB’s - what’s best media for fx6’s?

The ammo is not terrible I’m just a perfectionist....

One w/c a week would be better....

Big tank is still I dunno 30-45 days (once cycled) from being an option for me....

Biorings in fx6. I think you don't actually have an issue with ammonia. That's my opinion though, I think it's more of a "misread" of the test. Seems you'd have more then enough bioavailable space to convert whatever ammonia would be made in your tanks. Also seems enough time has gone by. I missed it are you using prime or another ammonia binder? If the tests are actually accurate I'd say a good bacteria in a bottle may be an answer. Like mb7, little expensive but works great.

I'll try the mb7

yes using prime.

I know my idea of prime inhibiting the cycle has been disagreed with. This is one of the cases that if you truly are seeing ammonia there really isn't much other reason for it. I have no scientific proof, just stories like yours. I had the same issue in a tank. I stopped using prime and started letting my water de-gas and or started filtering it to remove chlorine and chloramine luckily I've not had chloramine. Fixed my issues.
I first heard about mb7 while reefing and have used it since. I have started tanks with fish followed the directions and never had a problem. It is alive and it does work. I used it in a fishless tank with all new bio. After a week of dosing mb7 and ammonia I had a strong enough biological filter to convert a dose of ammonia in about an hour. I added fish and just did the weekly maintenance dose for a few more weeks just to be sure.

Interesting idea,

I suppose I could get a different water conditioner, this tank was cycled with stability/pure ammonia/and another hob (EMP 350) filter from a previously gently cycled tank. Never really had a good nitrite spike...

The tank I took this (EMP 350) off of a 75g that I had started with old media cartridges from established tank (a different 75) and EMP 350 cartridge..

It’s been running for 6 months now though...

I dunno,

Just Ordered....

Lol yes it's the second one. But I've heard good things about fritz stuff too.

I don't like using any dechlorinator that says it binds ammonia or nitrite in the tank. If you are going to pre condition your chloramine containing water outside the tank then wait a couple hours fine. But dumping it in the tank at time of water change I think is where we start to run into issues. Like I said I can't prove anything. Just some stuff that has happened with me, and possibly others, maybe you.
You never said chlorine and or chloramine?
