Amonina levels bad

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How often do you clean your filters?
I only cleen them every three to four months. Change the pads on the pro 3 thats about it i don't mess around with the media. Don't want to kill the bacteria in it. The fx6 is full of media right to the top thats it in that one. So i don't touch it. Unless clogged, but haven't ran into that problem yet. And the eheim classics 500 gallon are not old enough to worry about yet and they only have media in them.

Sounds like ur doing right. Think as the rays got big it’s just too much ammonia output. Some of the ray guys have drips. Where a line is plumbed in and dripping a certain amount of water. Then there’s a line dripping out water at the same rate.

Others have sumps with media and k1.

Maybe gotta ask Dieselhybrid Dieselhybrid and JK47 JK47 .

I'll have to look into this drip system but im really thinking is just to upgrade the tank and have it sumped. Those dam eheim were around 800$ each so i really didn't want to spend more but juat might have too

Hi, I'm looking for some ideas on what is going on with my fish tank. My Amonina levels are terrible. I haven't bean able to keep them at 0ppm at all. The nitrite and nitrate are at 0ppm but the amonina keeps spiking. I keep three freshwater stingrays in a 230 gallon fish tank. Two are bigger rays and i have one smaller ray as well. I have two eheim that are rateted for 500+ gallons also have a eheim pro 3 rated at 160 gallons and an fx6 fulval rated for 400 gallons. The fx6 is full to the top with media and the 2 eheim 500 gallon has about 9 lt of media in them. The meadi is the pro 2 substrate from eheim. The media in the fx6 is mixed media not to sure what brand it is. I think there is three different types in it. And i also have what ever media comes in the pro 3. Also have a bottle of purigen inside the pro3. I do a water change everyday but i have no luck trying to keep the Amonina at 0ppm. Does anyone have an idea wbat to do?

There isn’t enough gallons to dilute the bioload the rays are putting off. A larger volume tank, heavy over filtration and a drip system are all things that are required for ray keeping. Rays put out insane amounts of ammonia and are also rather sensitive to it.

Are you able to build a continuous drip system? This will be the most effective and stable way to address for now.

Eheim are awesome filters but for rays become way too expense to be practical. I have a number of the 2260 models around and usually use them for extra mechanical. A K1 style sump is by far the most cost effective and efficient way to filter tray tanks. If upgrades are an option, get an 8x4 and enjoy your new addiction;)

Yup...this is exactly how it all starts! Lol. Next will be the 8x4 tank, the k1 media in your monster sump, the fancy heated drip. Then your rays will breed, time for a grow out tank. Finally you'll be so deep there's no return...seperate systems to keep lineages pure, tanks for males, tanks for prego females. Welcome to the addiction! Lol

If I could “like” this harder, I would LOL

Thats what i have is the 2260 with 900 gallon flow rate but i run 2 of them but I'll look into this k1 stuff. And ya I'd love a huge tank but in the process of buying a house so not sure how my funds would be. But if i do go plywood I'd want a 12 x6 x3 if possible.
