@ aclockworkorange: lol, right?
@TheRealCramer: Thank you for your explanation. I did not know that the stuff in the bag wasn't legit pipe tobacco. That's what he gets. But now I'm curious about several things: (1) Why don't the big boys use this "safer" tobacco since its so much cheaper for the roll-your-own guys? Its gotta be cheap for them too... and (2) can one get legit pipe tobacco and make roll-your-own cigs out of it? What's the difference between the two? I know you mentioned cut, flavor, and moisture. Can you elaborate on that point?
I think legit pipe tobacco isn't used in cigs by consumers because the cuts are longer (ribbon cut, some inch or longer) and higher moisture content. Once lit and billowed, all the moisture bubbles out of the burning leaf timber the same way if you've ever thrown a wet stick in a fire and watched the hissing bubbles on the bark. I'm sure that would render the cig paper soggy and put it out. Some pipes use paper filters (I use on hot, humid days) to collect the moisture and they are soggy and gross after one bowl.
The reason the big cig companies don't use clean tobacco is probably cost and potency. The premium whole leaf is sold first to cigar manufacturers, the broken whole leafs are used for pipe and cigars and the shag is used for cigars and cigarettes.
Now, I'm not 100% sure, but from what I've read, cigs are pumped with menthol, sugars and fermented in a way that makes more nicotine. A non. Smoker can smoke a pipe and not feel lightheaded or sick. That's because there is very little nicotine absorbed. That's also why I've been smoking cigars and pipes for over ten years and I have no addiction. If I'm busy or on vacation I have no craving and can go a week without smoking. Although not having a chemical addiction I might pine for a relaxing sit and smoke.
Big cig co have always tried to make the smoking experience "smoother, cooler and fresher" to keep you smoking more. Roll your own is a cowboy cigarette and not for beginners or lady slim users. It's harsh and raw. If a 16 yr old tried his first cig and it was a roll your own it would probably be his last. The cig companies want to get Jr. hooked right away. Just watch the vintage adds targeting women.
I would like to know if your bf notices a difference in nicotine potency in roll your own and his old packs. And his opinion on a Newport vs roll your own in terms of bite and flavor.
