Azul grow out thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
To be honest I can't remember exactly where I saw them for sale - on one of the FB groups. You could very well be right and they may be using dated photos that make them look younger than they really are.

Rhyno - nice looking Monoc mate. I like them with heaps of ink or almost none at all like your one.

Shame that the male of the pair has died - I'm sure their are well and truly enough of them around Australia now that they will not be lost to the hobby anyway.

Side note - I got a new phone. The Samsung takes much better pics than my iphone did. Pics are much closer to what your eyes are seeing iphone would make everything look a bit blue from the LEDS. Pics taken yesterday.

He’s a beast! Makes me wanna blackout the back of my tank defeats the peninsula tank set up though, wishing I set mine up against a wall now takes up a whole lot of real estate where it is. I recon we’ll see these guys going around for years hopefully another bloodline becomes available to get some genetic diversity. I’ve noticed mine are getting some big flashes of light green on there cheeks amazing how they change.

I doubt that anymore would be brought into Australia - the monetary justification just isn't there.

I just hope that people would stop breeding hybrids. The Kel x Monoc hybrids were mostly 'junk' - didn't look as good as either species on their own. I would hate to get to a point where pure monocs are hard to get. Which is really similar to the Ray game. Try find a nice pure Motoro. Impossible. I know a couple people who thought they had pure motoro's only to produce pups that were anything but.

I totally agree, It’s hard to find nice bass at the best of time there’s a massive difference from a farmi Mono x ocel to a pure mono. It’s funny you should mention pure Motoro I’ve got two female pups in my tank at the moment and man are they growing fast couldn’t prove there pure but there from the same place as the bass time will tell I guess. I’m starting to see on mine what you’re talking about Rhyno with the green cheeks, both of mine have started to get it.

Also, do you guys find that in your group the dominant fish goes ballistic at the others straight after feeding time for about half an hour? After I feed my group the dominant fish will just about hammer the others until it decides to calm down usually about half hour afterwards. No damage is done other than some scared fish but it’s just curious it’s right after feeding.

Any updated pics fellas?

Mine are finally starting to slow down. One of the two boys is losing his spots and getting the azul blue.

I’ll get some photos of mine, tomorrow there starting to get some blue in the fins. My groups starting to really hit a growth spurt and develop a pecking order I believe my biggest is a female that just grew the fastest and the second largest sub dominant fish is a male he’s flaring up and chasing other fish except the larger. Mine never really held much spotting on the body not sure if it’s the tank being a peninsula tank with a white sandy bottom washing them out. Ph is about 6.8 nitrates are always less then 10-20ppm and total hardness is around 200ppm. Only intrigues me as all our fish are from the same origin.

Great pics, they are coming along nicely.

I did some maths, i got mine at 7cm 18 weeks ago. 23cm growth in 18 weeks. Which is 1.27cm a week or 1.81mm a day! haha crazy when you break it down.

Strange thing is I've shifted mine to a 6mm pellet in the last weeks, and they absolutely gauge themselves on these pellets, they still eat the whitebait but really love their pellets more than anything.

Bought some whitebait today for them. They were a bit sceptical on it at first, the smaller Azul took three no worries she was loving it. Smaller mono took one and swallowed. Big Azul was mouth at them softly and big mono didn’t even come close. I’ll try them again just before lights out and see if they are trusting of them then.

What temperature are you guys keeping yours at? I’m up around 28c.
