Question though. Wouldn't plain empty tanks (no gravel and plants) be easier to maintain?
I know it may make the fish more "comfortable" but in the long run, its a lot more work siphoning gravel. A naked bottom of the tank would be a snap to keep clean.

I thought my neighbor buddy might entertain getting into this field (breeding) since he can't seem to get a job since he was laid off and the entry level cost can sometimes be quite low, as you are finding out. This is good stuff.
