The term dither fish refers to an arbitrary group of aquarium fish used by cichlid keeping aquarists to reduce innate timidity in some species of cichlids (Barlow, 1967). The technique relies on the ability of cichlids in an aquarium to use the behaviour of other fish species as a measure of environmental security (Loiselle, 1979). Good dither fish are typically schooling species such as Danio spp., barbs and some tetra species.

I know that silver dollars are the common dither fish, but my wife is asking about bala sharks. I'm not sure why she likes them, but for me to get the 150 gallon setup I may have to go with them. Anyone have any experience/recommendations? I am thining one or two Oscars and a couple of the bala sharks.

You will need more than just a couple of bala sharks i reckon.

Honestly, bala sharks are probably some of the least intelligent fish i've ever come across.
Bala sharks will never hold theire own. In a "normal" tank setup without any cichlids, and basically just community fish, even though balas would be 3-5times the other fishes size they would never once stand up for them selves and just get bullied around.
I fear your balas will be considered dinner instead of proper dither fish.
To my knowledge balas don't school either.

I'd definately go with silver dollars.

Silver dollars are awesome. They have interesting behavior, make the tank seem more busy and perform excellent dither services.
