Bigger the Fish = More $$$$....is that true?

imo it matters salt vs fresh, in fresh water typically the price goes down as it approaches and passes 10" and then once it reaches 18"+ the price is always free to a good home.


in salt where "show size" is a usable term the bigger it is, the more its worth.

depends on what freshwater fish you are talking about this is monster fish keepers after all and im sure you could put a heavy price tag on any fish at or over 10" show quality or not but most dont sell for profit they sell at cost considering food consumption, etc. imo saltwater is overrated

Depends on the species.

A RB pacu at 2-3" sells for 6-$10, a 24" RB pacu sells for <$0

But a 4" silver arowana sells for 20-$40, whereas a 24" silver sells for $150+

I say it varies by species. All the fish get bigger and bigger, there is a smaller number of people with the equipment to house them.

People with a 55 vs a 220 are probably at least 100:1 in the general population. To the general population, a 75 is a huge tank

as far as a store is concerned fish price goes up with size....until it's a size that's hard to commonly house, then they're hard to get rid of due to lack of large tanks.

in general i feel private sellers will usually get far lass for a fish than what a store would, mainly due to the "i must have that" impulse buys of people at stores. as always a large tang can be valuable, but you have to find a buyer and to be honest in my experiences sailfin's aren't one of the more valuable tangs because they're commonly available in stores that have salt and they're fairly hardy.

Items including fish are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them, that being said I own a large tank and I am constantly looking for large fish to add to it. I am willing to pay top dollar for some things that are not common or of exceptional quality but as mentioned earlier in this thread finding peolpe who want to own or pay alot for things like a pacu is not easy. I would say it is very species specific and being lucky enough to find someone to accomadate your large fish is a large part of it too.

I have seen some pretty gross fish that were obviously stunted/donated from hobbyists and they go for some outlandish prices, simply because they are "show size" I would never buy a show sized fish...Love raising up my baby monsters.
