Black EBJD? Or a Hybrid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, maybe he is going through an ugly stage, hes only about 1.5 iches so he might be to small to go through that stage. I know most cichlids turn dark at some point in their life. If he does turn out to be like CHClause's do you think I would be able to sell him for a lot more than what I paid for him. I wouldn't mind taking a chance and raising a few more to sell when they get big :).

you have a black jack dempsey?, That is a good idea asking them to feed the fish. Right now mine takes food from fish four times its size, so I'm not to worried. He is getting more and more blue everyday (but he is staying black), I will post another picture soon.

Yeh i have 2

i have only ever seen 3 types

the sandy coloured type (dont like these much, never kept 1)
Black Jacks (currently have 2)
EBJD (want to keep 1 day)

Here is one of my black jacks

^ that a female JD

Yeh i thought so but its only 2.5" so they tend to colour up more later on :) hard to sex them when small.

hey glenbo that is exactly what mine looked like. as she got older she developed a light pactch in between her eyes

I think Glenbo's is a female, but it's a beauty either way . . .

my 4" EBJD was very dark blue, nearly black, when he was in my main tank, but with other large fish; he was low in the pecking order, and would hide in the corner

I've since moved him into his own tank, with just a few other juvie fish, and his colors have changed completely, to a very bright light blue . . . now he is out and about and swimming all over the tank

Yeh my friend had one exactly the same, his has a lighter patch between the eyes to, i thought his was a female as well because it had loads of blue pearling on the face and none on the body, but as hes got older, he has it the whole way now.

My 2 look pretty much identical, except one is a fraction bigger and not as colourful.

Its my 29th birthday today and 2 of my mates went halfs each and bought me a EBJD :D so i have 3 JD's now...might even by a sandy one so i have the whole lot haha :P (the ebjd is seperated from the rest)

By the way guys, is the black JD a different species to the common sandy colored JD's?

While they might be marketed as such or given the names by LFS's or online sellers, there really is no such species or variant of species called a "Black" JD or "Dark Phase Normal" JD.

There is THE Jack Dempsey and the man made EBJD. All others are fabricated names for selling purposes.
