Black EBJD? Or a Hybrid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I ended up getting a second one. Hopefully by a stroke of luck I got a male and female , but I doubt it. I know you can't breed EBJD with another EBJD, but maybe with this variation you can. Hopefully. Even though mine is very small and with larger fish, they swim around and don't get bothered.

It is black Estes marine sand. He was almost all black when I got him at the pet store, he has actually gotten a lot more blue in my tank. The only thing I cant figure out is as to why he has red on the tips of his fin. I can't find any other ones that have that.

Mine does and he/she is very blue and very healthy.(and getting big-fast about 4+'')

MCSnapper1: That's good to hear, I knew I would find someone. Would it be possible to post a picture of yours for comparison. How long did it take for yours to get 4 inches? Thanks!

While they might be marketed as such or given the names by LFS's or online sellers, there really is no such species or variant of species called a "Black" JD or "Dark Phase Normal" JD.

There is THE Jack Dempsey and the man made EBJD. All others are fabricated names for selling purposes.

Why are the blacks and sandy types so different then? even in adulthood?

I might buy one tommorow just to show you.

Therea are JD (standard Jack Dempsey)
EBJD (Electric Blue Jack Dempsey) (blue)
BGJD (Blue Gene Jack Dempsey) (look like a standard jack)
GJD (Gold Jack Dempsey) (the sandy color that you meantioned)
GGJD (Gold Gene Jack Dempsey) (look like a standard JD)

NO SUCH CREATURE AS DPJD AS OF RITE NOW. ....Like I said this could be a cool new morph IF we can get it started.

Maybe we are lucky here in England then.

We get these 3 types.

EBJD = electric blue marble colour, sometimes black with marble blue
Sandy = these are the bog standard JD's, look alot liek Texas cichlids when young, except they have a lot of blue spangling on the fins (with the red edging) the body is a creamy brown colour.

Black = regular JD but a lot darker with brighter blues, usually the same price as the standard less desirable sandy coloured JD's (around £2.50) they are usually in seperate tanks from the sandy type, and have similaritys with a convict, but much darker, with the blue spanglinh and red edging.

There is a serious noticable difference between the sandy and black types, neither are from the EBJD breeding batches...wich look very different again.

I'm off to buy a few cichlids tomorrow, i will pick up a sandy JD as they are so cheap, and take photos of all 3 types of JD's (as i have the black and EBJD) and post them up so i can show you what i mean.

This is what i can grab from google.

the pic of the Sandy regular JD is a texas cichlid.

Told you they look similar ;) i'll have to get one and photo it myself, those were just grabbed from google image search, and i thought he was one due to the similaritys and that he looks very diff to my texas (which looks almost electric blue).
