  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah, I'd have to learn more about those "sandy" JDs . . . if you can find some pix of adult examples, I think that would be really interesting

MCSnapper1: That's good to hear, I knew I would find someone. Would it be possible to post a picture of yours for comparison. How long did it take for yours to get 4 inches? Thanks!

Sorry for the fuzzy pics. He doesn't really sit still too often, but I think you can see the red.

yea I see the red, Did yours start out black like mine??, I'm glad this thread has been educational in showing the different kids of Jack Dempsey. I hope we can make a new morph out of these, that would be cool. I will keep everyone posted on my two and how they grow. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

No black since I've had him, but he was about 2" when I got him so maybe he was darker at the FS.

So I ended up getting a second one. Hopefully by a stroke of luck I got a male and female , but I doubt it. I know you can't breed EBJD with another EBJD, but maybe with this variation you can. Hopefully. Even though mine is very small and with larger fish, they swim around and don't get bothered.

Not to act rude or anything, but this isn't a new variation, its the same EBJD. The darker color is must likely the ugly phase or a stress factor I've seem 5-6 fry in my last BGJDxBGJD spawn that looked this way. No new variation just a dull colored EBJD

Maybe we are lucky here in England then.

We get these 3 types.

EBJD = electric blue marble colour, sometimes black with marble blue
Sandy = these are the bog standard JD's, look alot liek Texas cichlids when young, except they have a lot of blue spangling on the fins (with the red edging) the body is a creamy brown colour.

Black = regular JD but a lot darker with brighter blues, usually the same price as the standard less desirable sandy coloured JD's (around £2.50) they are usually in seperate tanks from the sandy type, and have similaritys with a convict, but much darker, with the blue spanglinh and red edging.

There is a serious noticable difference between the sandy and black types, neither are from the EBJD breeding batches...wich look very different again.

I'm off to buy a few cichlids tomorrow, i will pick up a sandy JD as they are so cheap, and take photos of all 3 types of JD's (as i have the black and EBJD) and post them up so i can show you what i mean.

This is what i can grab from google.

Sorry after reading this I had to post again. There is no such thing as a sandy Jack it's just a light colored jack Dempsey there's the Gold, The Blue Gene which carries the blue trait for EBJD, the EBJD and the regular, also on all things Dempsey I've seem the EBGJD which was a one outa a million chance. A GJD x EBJD or something got this i don't remember details

Jaws 19
I am on all things dempsey as well. I tried to post the same facts that you have posted. Many people have just ignored it. Black would be another cool new morph IF we could get it started, but I do not see it hapening any time soon.
