thats cause most people wont advance past there 125 gallon african cichlid tanks or there oscar and green terror... they misssed the part where this site was for the "NEXT LEVEL" so intern they will flame because they dont ever have a chance in hell of owning something of this caliber... now me personally i would get 10 grand worth of GATF and have a massive shoal but go for your unicorn.... im sure this thread will help your ignore list grow through the roof...

Very true, Any new's on the hunt?

Support or mock.....

Not that my opinion matters at all, but why not try to successfully keep a NORMAL GATF before spending all this money on a fish you have had a bad track record with?

Just trying to understand why....... I'd rather learn proper care techniques with a few couple hundred dollar fish than learn by losing a $10K fish.

But then again..... I'm no baller. Maybe that's why I don't understand.

I'de spend the $10K on a proper tank to house a big wild GATF..... I bet a big fish pulled right out of the river is gonna freak in a glass cage..... BAD. NO sub 1K gallon tank is gonna keep this fish in nice shape.

He's already addressed these exact comments earlier in the thread.

I'lll go ahead and adress this again. No my track record with these guy isn't great. but find me one person that has had these guys and not had one or two die for no reason. You're not going to find it. they are like lots of rare fish b/c not alot if known about them. it's all hit or his. I've learned a few things with the one I still have left and he's doing great. So I think i made the learning curve.

A smaller GATF that would most likely be brought in. around 8-12" tops most likley I can house very well for quite some time. I'll take my hybrid cat out and he'll have full run of the tank. and with a fish that's most likely going to be less then 1' and a thank that's 3'wide and almost 11' long he's got more then enough room for a long time considering these guys known growth rates. he will then get moved into a new tank that is in planning stages that will be around 4K gallons.

Now before you ask why are you not building the tank first. It's b/c I'm not building a tank that large in the house I'm Currently in. I'm not planning on being here by the end of this year if everything works out. So why build now when I can't move a tank that large. But as soon as I move I'll start the build. So why not get a jump start on the Search for this fish now then have a tank and no stock.

Yeah it's alot of money. Even to myself. I will most likely Never offer this amount of money for a fish again. (or maybe I will) but if you could have any fish you ever wanted and the money to do it would you not get it? It's a mater of something I want and something that would make my collection complete. If I did not get this fish either b/c the price got jacked up by another hobbiest (you know who I'm talking about Ashdavid lol) or it just never was found I'm ok with that. It's something I'm willing to put time into to find.

Hopefully I don't have to write that again. lol

Still no news on my end. :(

I guess I was thinking differently on size.... I figured IF you are paying a fisherman to go get one that you wouldn't be able to pick and choose on size, and the thing would be monster fishing size like you see in the books and such.

Believe me I know all about killing the fish of your dreams. NO ONE on this site is better at it than I am. I've killed enough Armatus to make 1/2 dozen experienced hobbyists very happy for a long time..... But instead they live in my freezer.

This is why I find it so puzzling. We both know Characins are VERY delicate and die for no reason......

I think it's great you are going after your dream. I went after my dream right out of school..... Spent more money on car audio equipment then you're offering up for this fish. BUT looking back I think it was a stupid investment. But I also achieved something that less than a dozen people in the world can say they've done. You're looking at achieving something no one's done..... So I can understand where you're coming from. I just hope you don't end up regretting it when the persuit of the dream is over..... Cause in all reality that's all it is, desperatly chasing a dream and no dollar amount will get in the way. Problem is people often dream in the moment meaning 5 years down the road the dream turns into a nightmare.

Good luck man!!! I hope it all comes together for you, and I'm rooting for you!!!

Ahh... no.... Fish do not die for no reason. People only say that if you can't find a reason, but there is always a key factor to why fish die unexpectedly. You should remember that instead of scratching your head each time one of your armatus die.

And just for info , some characins are some of the hardiest fish around so lumping them into one group is not wise.

damn, i dont think ever in my mfk career have i read a 16 page thread entirely. i have skimmed pics but never read, until now. i dont even keep much for other characins just my water cow. but i know where you are coming from. i had a head scratcher of a fish that took a long time to id what it was. i had a photo and a size and no one could tell me what it was. now i have to have a Bcrycinus Macrolepidotus only with a yellow tail. it is my unicorn and one day i will have a shoal of them. money doesnt matter when its something you truly desire. i bought my first fish a little under 10 months ago, and ive already dropped over 10k without batting an eye, because it is what i desired to do. so if you feel like spending 10k on one fish you go about your business and i have my fingers crossed for you. us true mfk COMMUNITY members have your back and if i could do anything to help i would, so since i cant, here is one big ass BUMP.
