I have decided to rather pull the acrylic panel out and re-seal this thing properly. I am also going to screw the panel in around the edges to make it even stronger.
Luckily it seems to be coming out without causing any damage. I am going to cover the front of the acrylic with some clear vinyl to stop is from scratching when i take it out.
In the mean time here are some of the future inhabitants of this tank. I have a 40 gal tank that they are in for now to grow them out a bit. The main tank should take about another two weeks now that I am taking the panel out.
I have now attached the acrylic panel in this POS with 5200 sealant, 100 screws and 3 layers of pond paint and it did not even get half full before it started leaking.
How long did you let the 5200 cure?
I have fishing clothes that have been laundered 50 times and still have
3M 5200 holidays stuck on them...
regular cure takes a week at least
and fast cure takes 2-3 days...
I let it cure for a full week. And now I cant get the panel out again, its stuck like crazy.
This whole corner panel idea is a mistake. The force on that corner is just too great. If it was rigid like glass it would be fine but there is just too much flex in acrylic for this to work.
What did you clean the mating surfaces with? acetone?
I feel bad for recommending something that didn't work for you...I know that 5200 is expensive, however I have used this product for 15+ years and have never had a failure with it unless the mating surfaces were extremely dirty/oily...or the cure time wasn't met...
Not blaming you here bud. No hard feelings, I sanded the surface of the acrylic with 80 grain paper and then cleaned it with acetone. I just think that the design is flawed and no product is going to help.
Ive got one more trick up my sleeve before I give up totally but I will only know by next week if it has worked.
