I personally recommend Synspilum just because they are colorful and readily available but any viejas are colorful and aren't too hard to find, but they do take over a year to mature and be breedable. You could also try a silver cichlid, a black belt cichlid, a zonatus, and many others.
I would imagine it would end up looking like a male RTM in the end as they are very closely related and similar looking already. I think it would end up with better looking fry if you used a Parachromis friedrichsthalii instead of the jag.
That could be an interesting cross, but remember many hybrids need to be linebred to look nice. I imagine it could be the size of Jag and have the patterns of one but have the bright red color of a RTM. Just remember that hybrids can be unpredictable and many fry will not show the traits you want, you will need to do a lot of culling and selective breeding to get a attractive hybrid that shows good body shape, patterns, and color.
Yes you are right. That is why it's just bouncing around in my head. The patience and culling etc I just dont have the time and tank space to seek out the stunning specimens
Yeah, I wish I had enough space to keep Cichlids like Dovii or Peacock Bass, I personally am able to cull efficiently for long periods of time but Tank space has always been a problem, I'm considering building my own tanks but I don't know if it'd be more cost-effective.

No clue. A gold jag might work too if you plan more on the fader route. But they could potentially be near the same look in the end or look totally different.
Speaking of Cuban crosses, the Super red cuban is pretty Interesting, only one of them faded but it looked interested, and it shows that Nandopsis species can hybridize with other Cichlids.
