Did this cop do the right thing?

Hmmm..... I highly doubt that a punch to the face is a part of his defensive tactics training...lol.

Could he have handled it better? Yes. He could have taken the girl down with an arm bar, put her on her face, and handcuffed her. Then he could have addressed the jaywalking girl. Easy for me to say though, and it is easy for people to criticize the way he handled it, because we weren't there.

I am not judging the cop. It is very easy to say shoulda, coulda, woulda. People don't realize how difficult situations like this are. I have been attacked while on duty. I handled it pretty well, and came out on top. But, I'm sure others who have watched that incident on video with me thought to themselves - he should have done this, or shouldn't have done this.

Bottom line is, you weren't there. You don't know what it was like, and even if you have good training, you can't say whether you would have handled it better in the heat of the moment.

I see your point but since you already stated that you work closely with L.E.you should know that when someone intervenes and decides to put their hands on an officer, that officer has to assume that he or she is is in immediate danger and a stop has to be put to the threat.Who's to say that he would even have been able to get to his crowd control equipment that is attached to his duty belt to even be able to use any of it???The woman was already pushing him so at which point would she decide to stop her actions? I first saw this clip very early this morning and at first I thought that the officer was wrong but the clip that the news channel had only showed the officer throw the punch, now after getting the facts and seeing most of what went down I feel differently about it.

SHE PUSHED HIM!! not slap, not grabbed for the gun, a freakin push!!

I cant believe some of the stuff said here. If this happend to u guys u would be calling for a repramand from his supperiors because he DESERVES it. A push does not deserve a punch. A push deserves gettin thrown on the ground, thrown on the hood, tazerd, pepper sprayed or so many other things. They are trained to handle this and trained proper technique. That was not proper technique

and yes she needed arrested, but not punched
as far as level of injury goes, i say a punch is much less serious than a tazer or spray. id rather be punched in the face for being an ass than sprayed or zapped, neither of those are fun.

i dont see why youre making such a big deal out a punch. is it that he used methods contrary to his training? because like i said, a punch is much more "humane" treatment than using the weapons on his belt.

the fact is its not proper technique. she needed arrested but not by being punched in the face. So many proper techniques for subdueing, no need to resort to such a technique. he needed to exspect to worse but a punch was crossing the line. is it less than a tazer would do? yes but a tazer is proper technique. they have rules as well as I do that need to be followed. when u venture outside those rules, reprocussions need taken.

i dont think he did anything wrong, it allowed him to take a little bit better control over the situation.

then again, i dont have any sound on this computer, and only hit certain parts of it. but i feel the pnch was necesarry

He definitely didn't take proper control. It took him way to long to subdue her. In all that time,
it gave the crowd time to get more and more agitated. Which could have escalated into something much worse.

jose what are u trying to do these days hmmmm? trying to rile up mfk huh :D

i think he was wrong for punching her in the face. they should know what to do in this sort of situation, he's a cop for crying out loud! he should have known how to restrain her and NOT punched her... but having said all of this i think it would not have had this sort of reaction if he punched a guy who was in the same situation...

Forgot to add something. Most of u guys are not law enforcement or firefighters. When u work in the public eye you are held to a diff set of rules and a dif standard. I have did CPR on people we knew were dead. why? because we had to make it look good. He needs to realise that he is in the public eye.

Thats exactly why he didn't slam her on the ground, drive a knee in her back and cuff her like he would of if it had been a man or young man.

yeah, because its a woman, he's in a lose-lose situation. punch to face or a face slammed to the ground, it's gonna upset the public regardless
