Recently my umbriferum has been hitting the to of the glass at night, well during the day also but that don't bother me, but at night the banging around I hear him doing I'm wondering is that normal this is the first monsters cichlid that I kept in my bedroom past a foot, recently just changed out the 55 gl for a bigger tank, the others (umbees and Trimacs) always in the backroom so I don't know what they do at night, but since this guy hit 14 inches he kind of been going nuts he's in a 100+ yeah I know the story all about how it's a puddle they need a 1000 gl yada yada yada all that... This is what I like to know in the wild are they nocturnal or daytime creatures, do they do better in fast or slow current, I really whish it was more literature on the Caquatia Umbriferum, sorry if I misspelled the scientific name...I read the husbandry of CU...By J.Rapps great article by the way...it's just not enough info just need more leads, any info????

All fish are able to eat at night some eat more at night. For example my fish always sleep an hour after the lights are off but if I'm feeding my rays at night they will smell it and wake up and then I feed them some pellets.

Most cichlids will be asleep unless they're disturbed. Remember they gave no eyelids just eyes so they sleep when it's dark or in a cave etc

Most is a generalization...I need specifics...is a Rio Magladena Caquatia Umbriferum nocturnal...my fish been in my bedroom for since 1inch he was born in the house he's used to his surroundings, we can be in the bed light and tv off....and he will take his mouth extended to where he make the glasslid pop up, and that makes a pretty loud sound when the house is quiet at 2 am...if I get up in the middle of the night he look to be half awake or so. Just want to know is that a food request..or...sometimes I think he's just playful..

Wow! Wouldn't you know a creepy crawler a bug, look like some kind of roach looking thing had been in the rim of the tank and the only reason I saw him when I was feeding him I opened the lid and as I was looking inside the tank and walla right in the brace wedged between the glass was this bug looked dead, went got a q-tip it to fish it out and it jumped on the floor where It took it's last breath. Wow I kind of learned something, it's been quiet last couple of nights no hitting the top of the canopy...so I concluded that my umbee can be active at night but mostly swimms in one spot resting, unless something is triggering the predatory instinct or annoying him. So I guess(reply) you were right when you said about him being disturbed...who knew they are that sensitive to vibrations.
