Wow, those are amazing, I think I actually like how most Umbee look more than most dovii, although it is very close

What were the personalities like in comparison? Where would you get umbees? is it better to try to order a bunch of little ones and wait for them to pair off to see male and female, or to just try to find a pair?

Definately better to get some small juveniles and raise them. They get to 10" in a year so you won't have to wait long. The males are easy to pick out of a group pretty early. Usually the females don't have anywhere near the blue spangling the males have.
P.S. I have many fry available if anyone is interested!

GMFISHNUT your Umbees are stunning. I'm growing out 11 right now that are between 3-4" for a friend and I will be keeping a pair for myself.I hope some of them look like yours. At this point I really can't make a comparison on which I like better but I can tell you that I'm really enjoying my Dovii.Their personalities are great and I love the coloring they display. That big toothy grin the male gives me is another big hit with me. I think it boils down to personal differences in taste.People are different and fish can be different. Here are a few pics of my Dovii. The tank pic I posted a while back and the rest are new.:)Mike

Vmike,
That is on awesome pair of Dovii. What colors on both the male and female. I hope mine grow to look like them. Check out this small F0 pair I have. They have already spawned for me twice. I have 2 tanks full of fry from these guys. They are the Costa Rican Rio Heredia race.

10" in a year sounds big. most large ca grow at around .5"/mo but there are always exceptions

Your right they went from 3" to 10" in a year in my 220 gallon. To be honest with you the Umbees are quite slow growing from when they hatch to abou 2". My Dovii fry grow at a much faster rate.

i have dovii and umbee i like the dovii better umbee are nice but mine are always shy until they get larger colors are drab until they get older and they also dont really hold thier own well with aggressive fish until they get larger. i remember looking for umbee for years hearing how bad they where but when i got them i think there overated. i used to raise tanks of dovii umbee and black nasty fry together and the umbee always finish last in the pecking order. still breeding dovii and black nastys but gave up on the umbees got one left i raised from a fry but dont think im going to keep him. just my experience

Both fish are awesome in my book. But going by pure looks, I think a monster Umbee is more impressive looking.

I've had giants of both species, and my preference is dovii........ Just a little more predatory in appearance. They are very similar in behavior.

Also, whereas umbees look better in photos than in person, it is almost impossible to take a photo that does justice to dovii.

I'de agree with most of that, But my expirence with the umbee' and being shy, even at a sm. sz. was'nt like that for me. my sm. umbees' that I got from Rapp's back in 97 were very active & boisterous, from 2'' on. The person stated they wanted a cichlid with personality & beauty. The dovii i kept when sm. were shy at first, then soon changed to be outgoing glass bangers. To me, on average, the dovii is more of a outright killer, good personality, great set of choppers for a cich. with nice colors & intelegence . The umbee, on the other hand, really mean glass banger, super personality, decent set of choppers, good intelegence and oozzes with flamboyants & color. Both are super-cichlids, but i'm partial to the C.Umbriferum!
