A gallon of water weighs approximately 8.34 lbs, depending on what is dissolved in it.

Water...tank...substrait...rocks and other decorations....yes it's over 400 pounds.
Earth movement is a constant danger to tanks in SoCal. The weight of the tank is meaningless however. As long as the stand can slide on something...I.E. Tile....wood...concrete... Then your probubly fine. if the stands sitting on carpet however it will resist moving and the tank will most likely shift...no mater what size it is.

mine is i think marble tiles..slidable wolf?

and i don't think i can do anymore walls on the tank stand...
it was big enough to make the chandelier swing back&forth..

so is my tank safe from sliding?

if it didn't shift or break in the quake then it's fine. Yes it will slide on marble with no problem. What you want...is the tank...water...and the stand acting as a single unit. When part of the unit...(stand) wants to move with the ground and the water dosen't...thats when you have problems.

Nah, you won't hit 400 lbs. Assume he's got 40 lbs gravel. Then 10 lbs tops for filtration, powerheads etc. 40 gallon tank, less than 10 lbs. However, when you add the weight of the substrate and fish, you take away from volume of water, so you don't actually have 40 gallons of water in the tank at a given time.
